One final reminder!! There's still time to register for our fall Youth Stringband Program - but don't delay! Registration will CLOSE TODAY, August 19th! This weekly gathering for youths age 7-13 is designed to explore traditional music, dance, and arts from our region. All skill levels welcome.

We're incredibly excited to announce the creation of a new scholarship to honor Floyd musician Willard Clower, pictured here with two of his daughters, Phyllis and Betty! Here is a message from the Clower family:
"The Clower family is proud to support the Handmade Music School through the Willard Clower Scholarship Fund. After attending the Korn Kutters Tribute in March 2026, many of us were inspired by the talented young musicians and the opportunities the school provides. Music has long been an important part of our lives, and we believe learning it at a young age builds confidence, discipline, and—for some—a sense of identity and belonging. Establishing this scholarship is our way of honoring Willard’s love of music and sharing his Floyd roots with the future."
The Willard Clower Scholarship Fund will help students under the age of 18 attend camps, take lessons, and learn through the Handmade Music School. We are incredibly grateful to the Clower family for their support of our mission and our students! Thank you!

This Saturday, August 22 we will be back at Floyd Center for the Arts for the 2026 Living Traditions Festival! Join us for an amazing day featuring music on the outdoor HMS stage beginning at 10am with the Little River Baptist Church Choir!

Presented by the Floyd Center for the Arts in partnership with the Floyd Country Store’s Handmade Music School.

The Floyd Living Traditions Festival is made possible by Skyline National Bank, Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Town of Floyd, Floyd Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Floored, Round the Mountain: Southwest Virginia's Artisan Network, Virginia Humanities, Red Hill General Store, and The Spice Bar.

This project is made possible by Mid Atlantic Arts Central Appalachia Living Traditions / Mid Atlantic Folk and Traditional Arts program, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

As other videos from this summer highlight, square dancing is a highlight of our Youth programing - it's a great way to enjoy music and strengthen our community. There's also a lot of laughter, as this video demonstrates. Margo was teaching us a challenging one here, but we figured it out!! Way to go, Teen 2026 Campers!

We would like to give a shoutout to all of the Handmade Music School students and teachers who attended fiddlers conventions this summer! While we know competition isn’t for everyone, we enjoy seeing our students attend these gatherings - Fiddlers Conventions are a key part of the music heritage of this region, as they offer a chance for musicians of all ages to build connections and learn new things! We love seeing members of the HMS community taking part in this element of the Appalachian musical tradition! Here are a few pictures from some of HMS families who attended a Convention this summer:
