Happy Fat Tuesday from your Blue Mountain School Teachers!

Although we aren't able to celebrate with a big community party this year, we ARE again working with Floyd PFLAG to continue the traditional costume contest!

Get on YOUR fancy garb and submit your fun photos to [email protected] by midnight tonight!

The categories are: Best Rainbow, Best Overall Costume and Best Family Costume!

Floyd's first Mardi Gras Costume Ball kicked off in 2010 as a Blue Mountain School fundraiser. For TEN years strong, we celebrated as a community by coming together in wild costumes and dancing the night away!

We were sponsored by the Republic of Floyd and Tom Ryan, Floyd's first King of Mardi Gras. Tom remained instrumental in creating and continuing Floyd's Mardi Gras celebration until his passing in 2013.

Many former and current Blue Mountain School students, parents, grandparents, and teachers have been part of past Mardi Gras celebrations. Participation has ranged from band performances, belly dancing, artisans contributing to our traditional silent art auctions, volunteers helping to run the event, cooking and serving delicious cajun food at our Krewe De Bleu dinner, and more. We are deeply grateful for the businesses and community members who have supported this yearly party to shake off the winter blues!

This year Blue Mountain School is keeping our party close to home with some celebrations for our students at school. We've been making masks in Art class, inspired by what we celebrate about ourselves! Our mask exhibit will come to life with a student costume parade! We'lll be sharing photos right here!
At this week's Monday Morning Welcome Circle we welcomed a new student to our Blue Mountain School community!
For our circle, we each went around the circle sunwise, saying our name and something we love about Blue Mountain School. A student said "Art!" A parent said she loves the teachers, a teacher said "I love starting new projects!"
We all have so much to love about our sweet little school in the woods!
Before Midwinter Break our Upper Elementary class presented their most recent projects!
We are so excited to be back at school tomorrow for more exciting learning!
The Upper Elementary class has been working hard, finishing projects and preparing for today's Project Presentation day!
A great big THANK YOU to the Howell/Hall family and S. R. Goff Hauling, Inc. for new gravel at Blue Mountain School! We're beyond grateful for the generosity and community support! Thank you!
Teacher Jenni's family gathered together in candle light to write about their gratitude.

There's still time for your family to be a part of the Blue Mountain School Winter Solstice Coyote Challenge! When you share photos of your family making memories with our Winter Solstice Coyote Challenge on social media use

And there's also still time to contribute to our End of Year Giving Campaign! You can support Blue Mountain School's nature-based, Contemplative Progressive model by visiting https://www.mightycause.com/event/Endofyeargiving

In Forest Kindergarten this week we had our first fire of the season!
Our first fire is an important time when we teach our young friends all the agreements around how we have fire at Blue Mountain School. We begin learning our fire songs, and tell stories while we sit together.
The day was even more special because we were able to savor the last peaches of summer around our first fire!
Thank you Latima Good for your generous donation of big beautiful organic peaches!

We're looking forward to Todd Scholl visiting Blue Mountain School this week while he films a documentary about progressive education.

He came to visit us at our staff meeting this evening, and introduced himself to those of us who weren't at Blue Mountain School in 2013 when he came to interview us about mindfulness in education.

Todd recently interviewed Tammie and Springhouse's Jenny Finn during a livestream discussing progressive education. https://youtu.be/slEW8L1iYzc

Todd is the Lead Learner at The South Carolina Education Association's Center for Educator Wellness & Learning (CEWL). The SCEA is the state affiliate of the NEA.

Blue Mountain School is delighted to introduce Kris Kiko-Cozy to our community at next week's camp, Making Magic From the Inside Out: Mindful Music and Movement

Kris Kiko-Cozy has been facilitating groups of all ages in music and movement for over 30 years. She often teams up with her husband Jeff who also enjoys bringing people together to sing, dance and make music. Kris draws from rich and diverse personal experiences and resources to knit together the common threads of different movement and dance modalities, simple, traditional songs, spontaneous improvisations, nature themes and the world's many spiritual traditions for joyful and meaningful expression in a safe, group context.

Kris grew up the oldest of eight children on a farm in NE Ohio. She began at age 13 teaching private clarinet lessons and at 16 performing professionally in the classical music world. Her passion for using the arts for health and wellness and community building led to work in mental health, the Bosnian war zone and many diverse educational settings.

Kris homeschooled their only child Helena for 12 years inspired by Waldorf education, and most recently created and facilitated an art, music, nature and garden-based program for Day Integrated Learning Center, a K-12 public school for students with emotional disabilities, trauma and autism.

Together Kris and Jeff perform an eclectic mix of Klezmer, Celtic, Renaissance, 30s Jazz and folk on clarinet, recorders and guitar, and Kris performs her original folk harp compositions.

There are a few spaces left in Making Magic from the Inside Out: Mindful Music and Movement.
Camp dates are July 6-8. Camp fees are sliding scale $120-$140

Blue Mountain School had a fabulous time at Floyd Small Town Summer! We enjoyed talking with our neighbors and connecting with our town! We saw new and old friends. We made wish flags, inspired by Katherine Applegate's book Wishtree, and to celebrate our Blue Mountain School Reads With Our Community Project!

Many of you may know about our Blue Mountain School Reads tradition. During summer breaks Blue Mountain School stays connected and continues to grow our relationship with literacy with a One Book, One School project, where we all read a book over summer; and before school starts we all come together to celebrate the book. This year we have a generous sponsor who is allowing us to share the book with the WHOLE FLOYD COMMUNITY!

All our neighbors are invited to sign up to receive a FREE copy of Wishtree by Katherine Applegate.
Our entire community is invited to connect and grow through our love of literacy!
We'll celebrate Wishtree at Blue Mountain School on August 1st.
If your family would like a copy of Wishtree use the QR code below, or reach out to [email protected] or follow this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ZWKKxpF9ai8yEl7sCdH3sfWIl3-u3ygZCYkSpyULDYk/edit?ts=62b37b6a or

Blue Mountain School's approach relies on our foundational commitment to treasuring wonder and the incalculable value in the pause. Teachers recognize the importance of slowing down, and not only seeing the possibilities, but provide space for the discovery! To provide this space for wonder and deep connection to ourselves, each other, and our environment, we rely on our excellent teacher to student ratios, we rely on our beautiful forested campus, our connection with nature, and we rely on generous donations from our community.
