Blue Mountain School Blue Mountain School is a contemplative progressive educational community located in Floyd, Virginia

Contemplative Education – Blue Mountain School helps students develop their awareness, concentration, and insight. We strive to use processes that illuminate the innate wisdom of human beings and cultivate a growing sense of peace and wonderment in everyday life. We practice:
The exploration of Wisdom Traditions near and far as a means to understand the spirit;
Poetry and storytelling as a means to explore the human condition;
Movement arts as a means to explore and enhance one’s sense of physical connectedness and awareness;
Silence and meditation as a means for reflection and inner awareness; and
Self-reflection and self-mastery techniques as a means to act with intention and thoughtfulness. Progressive Education – Blue Mountain School promotes Social-Emotional Learning and critical thinking through experiential activities and creative expression in a collaborative, project-based curriculum. We practice:
The development of intrinsic values over extrinsic punishment-reward systems;
Teacher-student collaboration in the learning process; ‘doing with’ instead of ‘doing to’;
Social-Emotional Learning to meet a child’s social, emotional, and intellectual needs;
A Project-based curriculum with subjects overlapping, as they often naturally do; and
Creative expression and reflection as a tool to find meaning and internalize learning. How do the Contemplative and Progressive models work together? Combined, these practices provide a holistic approach to education that nurtures the mind and the heart, the rational and the creative, the physical and the metaphysical; together, the Contemplative and Progressive models honor the whole child.

Learning is about more than academics. It’s about building meaningful relationships, practicing empathy, navigating emotions, and learning how to care for one another.

At Blue Mountain, social-emotional learning is woven into our everyday experiences. We emphasize creating space for children to grow not only as learners, but as friends, collaborators, and caring members of our community. 🌱

🌿 Is your family looking for a community where your child can grow academically, socially, and emotionally? Blue Mountain School has a few openings remaining for the 2026–2027 school year!

At BMS, we believe learning is about more than academics. It’s about building meaningful relationships, developing self-awareness and empathy, following curiosity, and discovering how we learn best—together.

Our contemplative progressive approach, inspired by Reggio Emilia, honors the whole child. Through hands-on exploration, child-led learning, time outdoors, and a strong focus on social-emotional well-being, we create space for children to grow in confidence, creativity, connection, and a love of learning.

We currently have openings in select elementary classes:

🔆 Amber Class:** Ages 8–10
🏵️ Copper Class:** Ages 10–11
🍎 Ruby Class:** Ages 11–12+

🍪 The Great Blue Mountain School Cookie Vote & Bake Sale is THIS THURSDAY at school pick up! 🍪

Our annual School Cookie tradition is back for its third year! Please join your students at pickup on Thursday afternoon, October 15, to purchase your picks, taste our cookie contenders, and support our school. After your taste test, you can cast your vote with our cookie ballot!

This year's flavors are:

🍫 Chocolate Crisps
🥜 Cashew Chai
☕ Cranberry Espresso
🌰 Malted Milk Macadamia

Each cookie is $1 so be sure to bring a few bucks to sample the contenders (and to take some home!) and cast your vote for your two favorites. Come hungry—these cookies will go fast!

The two winning cookies will be sold at Red Rooster Café for the next year, with $1 from each cookie sold donated to Blue Mountain School. Last year's winners raised an incredible $2,193 for our school!

This is a delicious example of project-based learning in action: our students help develop the recipes, share feedback with professional bakers, and even get hands-on experience baking at the cafe.

Come cheer on our student bakers and help decide which cookies make the Hall of Fame! 🏆

We were grateful to have another Blue Mountain friend, John Bowles and our art teachers guide our experience and inspire our own art!
