Several years ago, I embarked on a beautiful journey: I began the study of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Most surprising of all, my years on the mats had a profound effect on my perceptions and thoughts regarding my interactions as a piano teacher with the adults who studied with me. I'll be forever grateful to the wonderful people who were so generous in teaching me on the mats, and for the renewed purpose and passion in my work as a piano teacher that I found there. This TikTok looks at choosing music for success for adults who wish to play the piano again after many years away from the piano lessons they had as kids.
As always, my best advice is to study with a teacher! Many teachers (this one included!) LOVE adult students, and there’s never been a better time to study! However, resuming study with a teacher isn’t possible in every season in our lives. So, if it’s not possible for you right now, but you want to start playing again, follow along for advice from a teacher about getting started back.
In the coming weeks, we will think about the folks who remember almost nothing, and those who were more advanced when they stopped music study. For today, here’s some advice that will apply to many people who studied for a few years before they stopped lessons.

I always feel so sad for them because there is absolutely a way to come back to playing for those who wish to learn! Thoughts on Adults and Music Study

After a long break, I am so excited to announce that I will return to teaching piano lessons this fall. At present, I have space to accept new students of all ages on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. If you or someone you know is curious about piano lessons, feel free to reach out!
