Come and hear the wonderful musicians of Northwinds this Sunday at 3pm at the Florissant Performing Arts Center.
We’ll celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday with Gould’s classic “American Salute” and the “George Washington Bicentennial March” by Sousa. Enjoy a nod to Mel Brooks in his centennial year with music from “The Producers,” directed by Larry Marsh. You will also get tributes to musician/songwriters Irving Berlin, Billy Joel, and Chuck Mangione; a nod to 80’s band A-Ha with our version of “Take on Me;” a tip of the hat to the Olympics; new music from Rossano Galante; and special music selected for Northwinds’ tour to Germany this June – “St. Louis Blues” and “Germania Marsch.” Don’t miss this!

Northwinds is excited to present our principal clarinetist Russell Roussin performing the legendary Artie Shaw Concerto for Clarinet and Band. Originally composed by Shaw for the 1940 Fred Astaire film "Second Chorus," this jazz-inflectioned concerto is a benchmark work for clarinet, and a monument of the swing era. We're thrilled to feature Russell on this work!
Join Russell and Northwinds Concert Band on Sunday, October 19 at the Florissant Performing Arts Center for this and an exciting program of new and classic works for wind ensemble.

Northwinds was thrilled Sunday to surprise Maestro Larry Marsh, our former musical director, with the world premiere of “The American Northwest (The Expedition of Lewis and Clark),” composed by Rossano Galante. The work was commissioned by Northwinds and dedicated to Larry Marsh honoring his 42 years as our director. Mr. Galante has composed many works for wind band, and is also known as a composer and arranger of film scores. A versatile composer, Galante is especially noted for his programmatic and cinematic style of writing. He’s a Northwinds (and Larry) favorite, and the band has performed much of his work over the years. This was a project two years in the making, and we somehow managed to keep it a secret. It was a truly special and emotional moment for all of us in the Northwinds family to be part of this premiere and celebration of Larry Marsh. We are grateful for all his years of leadership and friendship. And he’s not done yet!
Thanks also go to Larry’s wife Kim Jones for helping us keep the secret and keeping Larry in town, Colleen Donohue for coordinating with Mr. Galante, and Mike Montague, Mary Haux, Tina Schneider, Colleen Heneghan, and all the members of Northwinds who helped with this project. And to those who shared these photos with us!

Among the celebrations Northwinds shared Sunday at our “Journeys and Celebrations” concert at the Florissant Performing Arts Center, we recognized clarinetist Gene Hamilton for his 50 years in the band. He was introduced by guest conductor and former Northwinds director Larry Marsh before the band performed one of Gene’s favorite pieces, “Slavonic Dances” by Dvořák.
