This , DIRECTO is honored to spotlight Ishwaree Datta (she/her) as the researcher of the week! Ishwaree is a PhD student in biology who is studying signaling pathways and drug candidates to treat colorectal carcinoma which is a deadly cancer that disproportionately impacts Black individuals compared to other racial groups. Ishwaree’s work is an important step in identifying therapeutics to treat this disease. Ishwaree is from India and is the first daughter in her family to pursue a PhD abroad. She is a wonderful role model for minority women in STEM and we are excited to see where her research leads! This , DIRECTO is proud to highlight Denisha Campbell (she/her) as the DIRECTO researcher of the week. Denisha is a PhD student who is interested in supporting Black and Brown students with literacy development. Her work will help address the gap faced by these students and ensure that this line of research is translated to relevant stake-holders and school districts. We are excited to see her future research on this important topic!

We love to highlight special & Tallahassee organizations that help the community. If you haven’t heard of any of these organizations, give them a follow!

The Hang Tough Foundation is a Tallahassee nonprofit. The offers resources and encouragement to families during their journey with childhood illness and special needs. Their vision is to build a community for families who are on a journey with childhood illness or special needs to provide a refuge and outlet that supports the entire family.

The FSU Food for Thought Pantry is an initiative run by FSU’s Department Student Support and Transitions. The is available for students who are in need of food. If students are in need they are required to show their student ID and sign a waiver form. They also accept donations and a wish list of high need items can be found on their website. https://dsst.fsu.edu/resources/food-for-thought-pantry

The Women Student Union serves to develop a greater awareness in the Florida State University community of women’s rights and issues and their relationship to the economic, social, and political nature of society.

The CRE is committed to helping students become accomplished scholars and active citizens—people of character who can drive innovation and enrich our society. DIRECTO is honored to spotlight Jasmin (she/her) as the researcher of the week! Jasmin earned her M.S. in biology from FSU and has researched elasmobranch (shark) ecology and phylogeny. She is an incredible advocate for minority participation in the sciences and is CEO of Minorities in Shark Sciences as well as the coordinator of the MarSci-LACE project dedicated to promoting minority students in marine science. You may recognize her from Saturday at the Sea where she worked as an instructor during her time at FSU. Jasmin also presented at last year’s DIRECTO fall symposium on her work with the MarSci-LACE project. Join us in congratulating Jasmin on all her hard work and wishing her the best of luck on her research going forward! DIRECTO is honored to spotlight Michelle (she/her) as the researcher of the week! Michelle is a M.S. student in FSU College of Communication & Information . She is working on understanding Autism in adults using the social model of disability. Autism, like many other “invisible” characteristics is often neglected in DEI conversations despite the biases associated with it. As an autistic individual, Michelle has faced and overcome many challenges in academic and research fields and we look forward to hearing more from her on this often overlooked aspect of autism.
