✅On our third day of LIT-FEST during AEFL Week, our focus was two-fold: Civic and Digital Literacy.

⚖️Our special guest speaker, Violent Crime Prosecutor Ryan White with the 12th Circuit Solicitor's office, put on his professor tam and gave students an awesome lesson in citizens and the law. His take on numerous questions helped students feel informed and valued on sometimes difficult topics. Kudos to both our students and Mr. White for a thought-provoking session!

💻Earlier, Mrs. Marsh, one of our College and Career Navigators, reminded students of the SC Digital Literacy Certificate that students can earn through the NorthStar platform. She is visiting classrooms weekly to practice modules, but today she gave an overview of the components and importance of the credential.

🍕We ended the day with a "pizza snack" as Dr. Justice called it! Thinking and learning all types of literacy can create a good appetite! Yummy!

💰💳Today’s LIT-FEST topic for AEFL week focused on Financial Literacy. In classes, students researched the cost of living anywhere in the US using the Living Wage Calculator by MIT. Teachers helped students realize the importance of family budgeting and setting priorities with family income. See the comments for a link.

📚🏦These lessons were reinforced by our guest speaker, Brooke Knotts, from First Bank of Florence. Brooke shared even more information about the power of personal budgeting as well as the power of the consumer with their banking partner. Our students were impressed and feel more confident than ever about their financial literacy skills!

🍗🍲We finished the day with a special visit by the Florence One Food Truck…wings & things for lunch is just right for our budget!

🗣️Along with other programs across the nation, Florence One Adult Education is celebrating Adult Education and Family Literacy Week.

🎉On our kickoff day, we were honored to welcome our area's local representative, Mr. Terry Alexander, who presented a copy of a Resolution adopted by the legislature proclaiming that September 14-18 is officially AEFL Week in the state of South Carolina. He also included two letters of support for our program, written on behalf of our adult learners. Mr. Alexander was happy to visit with our students, and made plans with staff to return at a later time to share more about his role as a legislator and leader in our community. Thank you for recognizing the work we do through adult education, and for valuing our adult learners for all they have to offer!

📚AEFL Week is a time for us to celebrate, demonstrate, and elevate adult education programs everywhere. We are happy to share why we are "the best kept secret in Florence" anytime!
