We need YOU because YOU are BCEA!

For decades, BCEA/KEA has advocated on behalf of educators every single year in Frankfort. Our own BCEA president is a registered lobbyist and is regularly in Frankfort during the legislative session, but they can’t do it alone.

KEA Public Schools Advocacy Days give YOU an opportunity to be a part of the legislative process. Members spend the day meeting with legislators, attending education committee meetings, and observing and listening to floor debates and discussions. We will have days for Boone County educators to attend in January, February and March.

📣 Did you know? BCEA works hard to negotiate the things that directly impact our classrooms and our lives — including the district calendar, salary schedules, and the terms of our contract. 💪 When we advocate together, we make sure educators’ voices are heard and our schools are stronger for everyone.

Did you know that BCEA has members on district committees? One of those committees is the Calendar Committee. We worked hard this past year to ensure that teachers are given adequate time to complete mandated trainings, set up their classrooms, collaborate and get ready for the school year.

According to 3.2 in the BCEA bargained contract, teachers will receive half of opening day (Thursday, August 13th) to work in their classrooms.

Monday, August 17th, is a day set aside to complete all of those mandated state/federal trainings.

Tuesday, August 18th, is a day for you to set up your classroom and prepare for the new year. Teachers appreciated and were so productive on this day the last couple of years, that we included it in the calendar again this year!

Years ago, BCEA bargained adequate and protected plan time into our contract. According to 3.3 -

A preparation period, the duration of one regular class period shall be provided each certified employee at the middle, and high level. This planning period shall be (at least) fifty-five (55) consecutive minutes… At the elementary level, a planning period consisting of (at least) forty-five (45) minutes divided into no more than 2 segments shall be provided. An effort will be made to provide, if possible, the entire plan time in 1 block.

Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) or planning period agendas can be required no more than six (6) times per month during planning time.

Non-members often say, “I’ll join BCEA if or when I get into trouble.” However, that’s a common misconception.

You have to be a member when the issue happens (think of membership like insurance). You can’t go back and get it after the fact.

The average hourly rate for an attorney in Kentucky is $236. The average amount a member spends in attorney fees to defend themselves is $0.

Most certified Boone County teachers follow 3.3 in the contract for their defined workday.

“The normal teacher workday shall be from 7:30 A.M. until 2:45 P.M. at the Middle and High level and 8:30 A.M. until 3:45 P.M. at the Elementary level.”

Please make sure to show up to work on time and stay until your contracted end time. BCEA has worked hard to ensure that our teachers do not have to work “other duties as assigned” like many other districts in the state after your contracted time has ended. You can walk out of work after the end of your contracted time without repercussions.

Keep in mind that administrators may call for up to two, one-hour-long meetings right after the contracted time each month. Each of those meetings may last for up to one hour (from 2:45 -3:45 P.M. for Middle/High or 3:45-4:45 P.M. for Elementary).
