The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) tells us that play is vital to the development of the whole child. Research shows, time and time again, that play promotes all areas of development and helps build relationships between adults and children. According to the AAP:

Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. Play allows children to create and explore a world they can master, conquering their fears while practicing adult roles, sometimes in conjunction with other children or adult caregivers.
..There are early learning programs that have adopted a completely child-led approach to curriculum planning and play. These teachers carefully observe children at play. They engage with children in ways that do not disrupt their play to promote problem-solving, risk assessment, and collaboration."

This is how we teach at Nonotuck and we are committed to children learning through play. We're happy to share that our local kindergarten teachers tell us that they are always glad to know they are getting children from our school, because the children have the emotional and social skills they need to succeed in a more structured setting.

We have a new magnetic board on our playground (another is being installed soon.) So excited to have this, as children are able to position ramps and tubes and will have to chance to experiment with water and balls, rolling and flowing down. It's an interactive play space that highlights slope, momentum, and gravity through hands on experimentation. Preschool physics!

We often see children with varying ° of sensory processing issues. This is a good reminder of the positive that come from being it child who is focused on their senses. And there are links to resources as well.
