A place for memories of the historic Maud Lindsay Free Kindergarten Maud Lindsay Free Kindergarten was the first free kindergarten in the state of Alabama.
It was founded in 1898 by Ms. Lulie Jones as Florence Free Kindergarten. The original purpose was to provide a school for the children of the mothers who were working in the cotton mills of East Florence. The school was named in memory of it's first teacher and children's author, Maud McKnight Lindsay, upon her death in 1941. Miss Maud, as she was affectionately known, was a wonderful teacher who'
Registration for the 2020 - 2021 school year will be from 8:30 - 10:30 am on Friday, March 6, 2020. Children must be 4 years on or before September 1 to attend. Please bring your child's birth certificate and immunization record to registration.
In case you missed the news release last week, we are happy to post that Maud Lindsay Free Kindergarten has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. We feel this is a great honor and we are excited for the City of Florence and the Shoals area. We want to thank Dr. Carrie Barske, her students and staff for researching the history and nominating the school for the national register. We also want to thank the City of Florence for funding the school each year that allows us to continue operating.

Maud Lindsay Free Kindergarten Registration reminder: Registration to fill remaining seats for 2019-2020 will be this Friday, August 30th from 8:30 am - 10:30 am. Children must be 4 years on or before Sept. 1st. Please bring child's birth certificate and immunization record to register. Following tradition, Maud Lindsay opens for the year the day after Labor Day. Daily operating hours are Monday - Friday, 8 am - 11 am.

Registration, to fill remaining openings for the 2018-2019 school year, will be Friday, August 31, 8:30 am -10:30 am. Children must be 4 years on or before Sept. 2. Birth certificate and immunization records are required.
If you missed our scheduled registration for the 2018-2019 school year, it is not too late! Maud LIndsay Free Kindergarten still has spaces available for children who will be 4 years old on or before September 2. Please message us here to schedule a time to visit the school and register your child.
