Aroha Afro Latin Dance invites you to come dance and socialize at Lula's Southside location. Men, women, couples, singles, families, friends, are welcome! A series of short intro dance lessons in the basics will be offered at from 6:30-7:30

🌍 DANCE HISTORY: KIZOMBA 🖤 Oct 9-11
Kizomba emerged in Angola in the late 20th century, growing from Angolan musical and dance traditions alongside influences from other Lusophone African cultures.

The word kizomba comes from Kimbundu, an Angolan language, and is associated with celebration and gathering.
Its music developed alongside semba, while zouk from the French Caribbean also influenced the sound and movement that became modern Kizomba.

🌎 DANCE HISTORY: SALSA 💃🏾 Oct 9-11
Salsa is more than a dance—it is a story of cultural exchange and Afro-Caribbean creativity.
Its roots reach into Cuba, where African and European musical and dance traditions came together. Son Cubano, Rumba, and other Cuban forms helped shape the movement and music that would become associated with Salsa.

As Caribbean communities migrated, particularly to New York City, Cuban and Puerto Rican musicians and dancers continued evolving the style. By the 1960s–70s, the term “Salsa” became widely associated with this vibrant musical and dance movement.

Bachata was born in the Dominican Republic and grew from a blend of musical influences including bolero, son, and Afro-Dominican traditions.

For years, bachata was associated with working-class communities and was not embraced by Dominican society's cultural elite.

But the music persisted.

🎶 Guitar.
❤️ Heartbreak.
🌴 Dominican rhythm.
🕺🏾 Social connection.

Over time, bachata moved from the margins into the mainstream—eventually becoming a global social dance. Today, you'll find bachata danced around the world, but its roots remain deeply connected to Dominican history, music, and culture.
