Great time with a fun-loving and diverse group of students from Dr. Ward’s Death and Dying in Social Context course. On October 27, they traveled to Charleston, SC for a night-time, two-hour walking tour of Magnolia Cemetery. The tour guide provided a fascinating history of Charleston’s unique burial customs, and everyone returned with a few ghost stories to tell as well! Many thanks to the Ready to Experience Applied Learning (REAL) program and the Department of Sociology at FMU for helping to fund this special trip!!

Dr. Rusty Ward has recently published “The effects of nonresponse and follow-up mailings on a citizen survey of law enforcement services” in the peer-reviewed journal, Police Practice and Research. Dr. Ward also delivered the presidential address at the 46th annual meeting of the South Carolina Sociological Association (SCSA) hosted by Francis Marion University in downtown Florence, SC on February 26th. Dr. Ward’s presidential address was titled, “On making sociology matter: Lessons to (un)learn,” and the full-text of his scholarly paper appears in the spring 2022 issue of South Carolina Sociologist, the official publication of SCSA.
