What communication skills can you expect around age 3? 🗣️✨

Many 3-year-olds are beginning to:

🔹 Use phrases containing three or more words
🔹 Use a growing vocabulary
🔹 Be understood by familiar listeners most of the time
🔹 Ask and answer a variety of “wh” questions
🔹 Use grammatical forms such as “-ing” verbs and possessive “-s”

Every child develops at their own pace, and milestones are general guidelines—not a pass-or-fail checklist. If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language development, an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist can help determine whether additional support is needed.

🗣️ Help your child build stronger language skills during everyday routines!

Try these three simple speech therapy strategies at home:

✨ Recast — Repeat your child’s message using the correct grammar.
Child: “Mommy home.”
Adult: “Yes, Mommy is home!”

✨ Expand — Repeat your child’s words and add one more word.
Child: “Ball.”
Adult: “Big ball!”

✨ Model — Use short, clear phrases while completing daily activities.
“Wash hands.”
“Pour milk.”
“Put shoes on.”

These small interactions create meaningful opportunities for your child to hear and learn new words and sentence structures throughout the day. 💬

Learning through play is one of the best ways to build communication skills! This week’s activity is simple, fun, and packed with language opportunities.

While completing a puzzle, encourage your child to:
🗣️ Use action words like “put in,” “take out,” “turn,” and “fit.”
💬 Request “more” to practice functional communication.
✅ Answer yes/no questions such as, “Does this piece go here?”
🧠 Build problem-solving, attention, and fine motor skills along the way.

Remember, every puzzle piece is another opportunity to strengthen language skills while making meaningful memories together. 💙
