This week, our team member Allison Oates attended a job fair hosted by SC Works P*e Dee and the Housing Authority of Florence, where she connected with more than 50 prospective employees and shared about the many opportunities available across Florence 1 Schools, including classroom assistants, shadows, custodians, and bus drivers.

We also enjoyed sharing more about the benefits of being a Florence 1 Schools employee and what it means to be part of a team dedicated to serving our students and families.

Members of our Transportation team were on hand as well, connecting with potential bus drivers and highlighting the important role they play in supporting our students each day. 🚌

Did you know that our Transportation Department transports approximately 8,500 students to and from school every day? That's an incredible responsibility and an essential part of keeping our schools connected to the families we serve.

Chants Up!

From to Florence 1 classrooms, we’re creating pathways for future educators to grow and thrive!

Yesterday, our team met with Betsy Costner, Director of Clinical Experiences and Education Licensure at Coastal Carolina University’s Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences, to explore more ways to connect future educators with meaningful experiences in the classroom.

From internships and pre-service teacher placements to connecting students who aren’t education majors to the exciting career opportunities through TeachFlorence1, we’re building pathways that introduce future educators to the rewarding work happening in our schools.

Every teacher has a journey. We’re proud to be part of it with Coastal Carolina!

For Florence 1, connecting with local and state universities is all about cultivating partnerships, creating pathways, and building relationships that open doors!

Last week, Nathaniel Marshall and Courtney Clayton, our Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, had the opportunity to travel to Morris College to meet with Sabira Smalls, Director of Career Services. During their visit, they talked about how TeachFlorence1 can create opportunities for students who may not be majoring in Education but are still interested in making a meaningful impact through teaching.

It was a refreshing and energizing conversation, and at one point, Ms. Smalls said, “Oh, I need to come to Florence!” We were more than happy to extend the invitation to her and to students to come experience what Florence has to offer!

We’re looking forward to connecting again with Morris College students on October 6 for their Job/Graduation Fair, where Dr. Clayton will be available to share about TeachFlorence1 with interested students.

On September 2nd, Ashleigh Young and Nathaniel Marshall visited the USC Aiken School of Education to meet with Associate Dean Dr. Juan Walker and Dean Dr. David Buckman. We are excited to welcome them to Florence 1 soon for a visit and tour of some of our schools and facilities, including The Farm!

During their visit, Ms. Young and Mr. Marshall were especially impressed to learn about the programs and support services that USC Aiken offers, including Teaching Fellows, Call Me Mister, and RISE.

Did you know USC Aiken offers the USCA LIFE program (Learning Is For Everyone), which gives students with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to experience college life? Florence 1 students are able to gain work experience through Project SEARCH, and we would love to see them become future USCA LIFE participants!

A special thank you to Myasia Smoke, an Early Childhood major and Call Me Mister participant, who gave a campus tour, and to Corey Feraldi, Director of Career Services, who spoke with Ms. Young and Mr. Marshall about opportunities available to all students, even those who are not education majors, when they stopped by the Career Center.

📚F1S Educators Engage in IMSE Training!

Last week, F1S educators participated in IMSE Professional Development, deepening their knowledge of structured literacy and evidence-based instructional practices.

Educators explored how to apply IMSE strategies to strengthen foundational literacy skills and support student reading success.

🎒Growing Great Teachers in the P*e Dee

Ashleigh Young, F1S Staffing Coordinator, and Nathaniel Marshall visited Coker University’s Wiggins School of Education this week, connecting with Dean Stockdale and Karen Ortiz, Coordinator of Teacher Internships, Certification & APEC (Alternative Pathways to Educator Certification).

While touring the School of Education, they had a great conversation about Coker’s TA-to-Teacher Program, a pathway for Teaching Assistants who are interested in becoming certified teachers.

In Florence 1, we believe in building pathways, growing talent, and investing in the future of education. We’re proud to partner with Coker to help bring more passionate, talented teachers into our schools. Together, we’re helping more aspiring educators find their path to the classroom and to a career where they can grow, lead, and make a lasting impact.

🍎 Supporting the Next Generation of Educators! 🍎

Yesterday afternoon, Ashleigh Young and Nathaniel Marshall had the opportunity to attend the School of Education Kickoff at Francis Marion University, connecting with new education majors and students who recently transferred to FMU from other institutions.

Dr. William Carswell, Interim Dean of the School of Education, hosted the event to help students build relationships with faculty and peers as they begin their journey toward becoming educators. After recently visiting with Dr. Carswell, Florence 1 was honored to be asked back to campus to be part of that conversation and, more importantly, to begin building relationships with these future educators early in their college experience.

We look forward to welcoming these students into our schools through internships, practicums, and student teaching experiences, continuing to build those connections throughout their college journey.

Today’s education majors are tomorrow’s teachers, mentors, coaches, and difference-makers. We’re excited to get to know them and be part of their journey! 🌱

What happens when you invite a university leader to see Florence 1 Schools firsthand? You inspire a return trip with future educators! 👏🎓

Today, Nathaniel Marshall and Courtney Clayton, Executive Director of TeachFlorence1, welcomed Elizabeth Hawkins, Program Coordinator of Teacher Education at the University of South Carolina Sumter with the USC Aiken program, to Florence 1 Schools for an inside look at the opportunities we’re creating for students and the opportunities we’re providing for our educators.

After a brief introduction, Ms. Hawkins toured several of our campuses, including the Poynor School of Healthcare Innovation, The Farm at Florence, West Florence High School and Briggs Elementary, all within two hours.

And her reaction? She was blown away and asked our favorite question yet: "Instead of you coming to us, can I bring my future educators to Florence 1?"

Our answer? Absolutely!💛

We’re excited to welcome USC Sumter’s future educators later this semester and show them what’s possible when a community truly puts Students First.🥳
