Season 1 of Remind My Soul is coming to a close and it is fitting that our season finale drops on Juneteenth.

Over ten episodes, we’ve explored stories of resistance, courage, creativity, and freedom. We’ve talked about freedom seekers, abolitionists, educators, artists, and ordinary people who changed history in extraordinary ways.

In our season finale, we tell the story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers—a group of young Black students who helped save their school, challenged a nation, and transformed American music through the power of their voices.

As Akrobatik reflects in this clip, the story doesn’t end with the Jubilee Singers. Their influence echoes through gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop. The music we love today carries pieces of their legacy.

🎙️ A LIVE recording of Remind My Soul with legendary emcee and educator Akrobatik.

Here’s the twist: I’ll tell Akrobatik a true story from American history that he’s never heard before. We’ll unpack it together in front of a live audience. Then he’ll have just 30 minutes to write an original verse inspired by the story and conversation before performing it live.

We’ll also be joined by historian Ousmane Power-Greene and producer Ibrahim Ali for a conversation about Juneteenth, freedom, land, memory, and why these stories still matter today.

“If they were so inferior, why did you need a law to stop them from learning how to read?”

That question from Akrobatik resonated with all of us.

For generations, Southern lawmakers passed laws making it illegal to teach enslaved Black people to read and write.

Those laws reveal something important: the people in power understood just how transformative education could be.

Sometimes history raises questions that still challenge us today.

Did you know that the origins of Memorial Day are deeply connected to Black history?

In 1865, just weeks after the Civil War ended, formerly enslaved Black Charlestonians organized one of the earliest known Memorial Day commemorations. They reburied Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prison camp and honored them with a massive public procession.

Just a few years later, during Reconstruction, Black citizens in Colfax, Louisiana were massacred while defending the results of an election and their right to participate in democracy. Check out our most recent episode of remind my soul. Link in bio.

The fight over freedom didn’t end with the Civil War.

This Memorial Day, we remember not only those who served—but also those who fought to make American democracy real.

In 1873, Black citizens in Colfax, Louisiana were murdered for defending the results of an election during Reconstruction.

This week on REMIND MY SOUL, Akrobatik reflects on the Colfax Massacre, white supremacist violence, and the long struggle for Black political power in America.
