Lucas Hasting won first place in the undergraduate poster competition at the 2026 MAA Southeastern Section meeting with his research titled "Computational Approaches using Machine Learning to Predict Functional Impact of SERPINA1 Missense Mutations".
Lucas is majoring in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Information Technology with minors in Cybersecurity and Data Analytics. The 2026 MAA (Mathematical Association of America) Southeastern Section meeting was held March 26-28 at the University of North Alabama.

Sophomore Computer Science major Caleb Ellis presented his undergraduate research project at the UNA Scholar's Day. His work is titled "Evaluating the March Madness Selection Process Using Weighted Wins."

On April 4, Computer Science major Jackson Ferrigno (pictured with advisor Dr. Mark Terwilliger) presented his undergraduate research project at the UNA Scholars Day.
The title for his work is: "Deep Learning Methods in Modern Grid Management - Integrating LSTM Forecasting and DRL Optimization for Enhanced Grid Resilience"

At today's UNA Scholar Day, Computer Science major Avinash presented his work on the SHH gene which provides instructions for making a protein called Sonic Hedgehog. He applied bioinformatics to all known unclassified variants associated with holoprosencephaly. He was able to identify variant A306T as likely pathogenic based on in silico analysis including molecular dynamics simulation results.

UNA computing students competed in the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) regionals this weekend. Three teams of three students each from UNA participated in the ICPC Division 2 contest. Team coaches were Dr. James Jerkins and Dr. Daniel Ray.
Team "Buffering" with members Cooper Vandiver, James Palmer, and Garrett Brewer placed first at the Samford site in D2 by solving 6 problems (photo: right-to-left).
Team "Byte assemblers" with members Raiden Greene, Collier French, and Lucas Hasting placed second at the Samford site in D2 by solving 4 problems (photo: right-to-left).
Team "Halt, catch fire" with members Kennedy Baccus, Anshika Anshika, and Aidan Rouse placed third at the Samford site in D2 by solving 2 problems (photo: right-to-left).

UNA's student chapter of ACM hosted two guest speakers Thursday, September 9. Atticus Wright, UNA Alum - Computer Science 2013 and Senior Software Developer at Cypress Mill, presented a talk on Django and Laravel. Will Reade, COO of Cypress Mill (https://cypressmill.co), presented a talk on working in tech and software development.
