Turtle Point Science Center Turtle Point, part of the Escambia County Alabama Board of Education, is a hands-on science center that serves school groups and the general public.

Join Legacy and the Alabama Forestry Foundation as we explore the importance of urban forests and green spaces while discovering ways to support wildlife, reduce litter, and protect Alabama’s natural resources. Participants will learn about native songbird recovery, Alabama’s trees, invasive species, and the role of trees in our communities. The workshop also includes a Capitol Canopy Hike and hands-on activities such as outdoor classrooms, dichotomous keys, and a Web of Life activity designed to connect conservation concepts to engaging classroom experiences. Did you know? Butterflies and moths have a coiled up “tongue” kind of like a frog! Butterflies and moths have a proboscis. A proboscis is tube, much like a drinking straw. This tube can be coiled up like a spring for storage, or extended to enable them to reach deep into flowers to suck up nectar!

July 18 - 26 is Moth Week. Alabama has an incredible diversity of moths with more than 1,000 species. And you can easily observe them in your own backyard.

Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is a drop-dead gorgeous summer perennial. And it’s native! Native in Georgia, all through the eastern US and more. Lush green leaves are a perfect foil for the deep, red flowers that start at the bottom and bloom for weeks until the top is reached. Hummingbirds love them as do cloudless sulphur and tiger swallowtail butterflies. Naturally found in wet areas and edges, they also do very well in our gardens. They are mostly short-lived perennials, but seeds and offshoots help keep the population going so well you might not even know that some didn’t return.

Calling all teachers! We’ve had a few cancellations, which means 9 spots have opened up for Gulf State Park’s upcoming teacher workshop, Teaching Beyond the Walls: Alabama’s Ecology in Action!

This Teacher Workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, and is AMSTI TEAMS approved! Participants will engage in interdisciplinary STEM instructional strategies that use AL forests, waterways, biodiversity, and natural systems as outdoor labs for place-based learning.
