WHAT DOES A CANADIAN WALLEYE ANGLER TAKE HOME FROM FISHING EDUCATION WEEKEND?

A lot more than a few fishing stories!

Al Schwemler lives near Toronto, Canada, and fishes Lake Ontario and inland lakes in Canada. He attended our 2025 Fishing Education Weekend on Saginaw Bay and is coming back again this November!

I recently asked Al what he learned at FEW that changed the way he fishes.

One of the things he mentioned was the importance of planning, from understanding walleye migrations to baitfish patterns and movements.

But here's what really caught my attention:

"Also, even though Saginaw Bay is not my home waters, the planning and ex*****on of the shared information can be applied to my home waters"

THAT is exactly what Fishing Education Weekend is all about!

We're not just teaching anglers where to catch walleyes on Saginaw Bay. We're teaching them HOW to find fish, understand what's happening on the water and put together a gameplan they can use wherever they fish.

Al also talked about the camaraderie, the willingness of everyone to share information, the great dinners and how much FUN the event is.

And he's coming back for more in 2026!

We all love catching fish like this, but figuring out the Detroit River isn't always easy!

What's the biggest challenge you face when fishing the Detroit River?

SOMETIMES THE BEST THING YOU CATCH IS A FISHING PARTNER!

One of my favorite stories from Fishing Education Weekend involves these two guys, Al and Ken.

One came to FEW without a boat. The other had a boat and was looking for somebody to fish with.

So I put them together.

Well, they hit it off, and they've been fishing together ever since!

That's one of the things I really enjoy about FEW. Sure, we're there to learn more about walleye fishing, share information and become better anglers.

But sometimes the friendships that come out of it are just as valuable as what we learn on the water.

And remember, you DON'T need to own a boat to attend Fishing Education Weekend. We welcome non-boaters and work to find them a seat with another attendee.

WHERE WOULD YOU FISH? — OCTOBER EDITION

You're looking at a lake you haven't fished in a month. It's October, water temperatures are dropping and you need to find walleyes.

Take a good look at this chart.

You've got some interesting options — shallow water, steep breaks, a prominent point and deep water nearby.

You can only pick ONE place to start looking for fish.

Where are you going, and WHY?

Give me a depth, a piece of structure or a specific location on the chart.

And here's the important part...

HOW DO YOU FIND THE RIGHT BAIT — AND THE BEST LOCATIONS FOR FALL WALLEYES?

We've spent the last few days talking about finding bait for fall walleyes.

Where do you start?

What is the best food source available?

What kind of forage are the walleyes feeding on — and what should that forage be doing right now?

But here's where it gets interesting…

How do you actually take that information and use it to find fish on a lake?

That's one of the key things we'll be working on at Fishing Education Weekend, November 5–8 on Saginaw Bay.

FEW isn't just about going fishing for four days.

It's about learning HOW to find fish.

We'll look at things like fall forage, seasonal movements, structure, weather, electronics and the information we're gathering on the water.

Then we fish.

We come back, compare what everybody found, talk about what worked — and what DIDN'T — and use that information to build a better gameplan for the next day.

30 anglers. Four days. One fishery. Everybody sharing information.

No tournament.

No reason to keep secrets.

Just a bunch of walleye anglers trying to get better at figuring out fish.

That's Fishing Education Weekend.

NOT ALL OCTOBER WALLEYE FOOD MOVES THE SAME…

Take a look at this picture.
Every one of those baitfish came out of a single walleye!

Yesterday we talked about starting with the BEST food source available today.

But here's the next question…
What is that food source doing?

That's important because not all walleye forage reacts to fall the same way.

Shad and shiners can move considerable distances as water temperatures fall and food sources change.

Perch, gobies and crawfish tend to stay more connected to bottom, structure and specific habitat.

Smelt, cisco and whitefish can create completely different deep-water opportunities.

So simply saying “find the bait” isn't enough.

You need to know WHAT the bait is — and what that particular forage should be doing right now.

That's when you can start putting together a pattern instead of just driving around looking for marks on your electronics.

If you could understand ONE October forage species better, which would you pick?
Shad? Shiners? Perch? Gobies? Smelt? Cisco? Something else?

YESTERDAY I ASKED WHAT YOU'D LOOK FOR FIRST…

Baitfish? Structure? Water temperature? Wind? Fish on your electronics?

There were some good answers, and the truth is ALL of those can be important.

But here's where I start…

I'm looking for the BEST FOOD SOURCE AVAILABLE TODAY.

That doesn't mean I just drive around looking for balls of bait on my electronics.

In October and November, I'm trying to figure out where the best food SHOULD be based on water temperature, wind, structure, seasonal movements and what forage is available in that particular lake. THE PROCESS not THE WAYPOINT.

THEN I use my electronics to verify it.

That's an important difference.

Instead of starting with:

“Where are the walleyes?”

Start with:

“Where should the best food be TODAY?”

Find the food. Verify it. Then start looking for the walleyes using it.

Now let's take this one step farther…

What is the #1 forage species walleyes are feeding on where YOU fish in October?
