SMS participated in our annual River Trip down the San Juan River with GCY! GCY provides opportunities for youth to experience the outdoors in a unique way. Students spend 4-5 days on the river, spending time on the water, sleeping under the stars, cooking meals for the entire camp, learning about the history, and building new connections.

Last week, Sinagua Middle School's very own Cross Cat 1 & 2 students had a blast at their Water Day! It was the perfect way to celebrate and reinforce our UNIQUE curriculum by blending hands-on sensory exploration, teamwork, and motor skill development in a fun, real-world setting. Happy Summer! 😎☀️

Earlier this month, Mrs. Robinson's 8th-grade culinary arts students had the opportunity to tour Texas Roadhouse. They were able to see both the front of the house and the back of the house, including the expo line and bread-making area. Students were able to walk around with trays to practice what it's like to serve. Students were given food and asked to buss their own area. What a great experience for Sinagua Middle School students.

Earlier this week, students from Mrs. Severance’s 7th-period science class visited Purina as part of our year-long STEM partnership. Students learned how to use a fire extinguisher, how 300,000 packages of dog food move through a warehouse, and the importance of teamwork when working in a large company. They also learned how Purina uses “Spot”, the robotic dog, to help monitor all of the machines at Purina. It was a great year of learning!

Yesterday, April 28, 2026, SMS welcomed guest chefs from the Blue Watermelon Project to work with our students! Together, they used fresh, farm-grown ingredients from Arizona to create a delicious sweet potato and carrot hash.
Our students truly enjoyed getting hands-on with fresh ingredients and trying out this healthy, flavorful dish. It’s always exciting to see them explore new foods and cooking techniques!
The Blue Watermelon Project has been an amazing partner this year, also helping us introduce dishes like lentil tostadas, Filipino pancit with snap peas, za’atar crackers, and pickles. We’re so grateful for their continued support in bringing fresh, nutritious, and culturally diverse meals to our students.

Big ideas + tiny model = HUGE impact 🦌🌉
The SMS Woods Class, with support from a grant through Arizona Game & Fish, brought wildlife conservation to life by building a mini model of the I-17 animal overpass—and it was a fun and interactive attraction at Saturday’s STEM event!
Visitors got hands-on with the interactive display and learned how the overpass and fencing will safely guide animals across the highway. Right now, around 80 elk and deer are struck each year in this area—but with the new crossing, that number could drop to just 8. That’s a game-changer for both wildlife and drivers!
A big shoutout to Chad Lowberger from AZGF for visiting our Woods classes and sharing his expertise as a Wildlife Biologist. Real-world learning at its best! 👏
