Sunnyside Neighborhood Association Celebrates Groundbreaking of New STEM Learning Facility

Flagstaff, AZ — May 4th, 2026 — The City of Flagstaff in partnership with the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association (SNA) hosted community members, partners, and local leaders this afternoon for the official groundbreaking of Sunnyside’s new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) building, to be constructed on the historic grounds of the former Fire Station #2.

SNA Chair Abel Estrella (middle in photo) welcomed attendees and underscored the significance of this investment for young people in a rapidly evolving world. “Building student skills in this ever‑changing environment is important for our nation’s youth, especially when it increases knowledge, science, technology, engineering, and math, which further enhances knowledge and literacy,” Estrella said.

He emphasized that the location of the new facility carries particular meaning for the community. “It is even more relevant because Sunnyside will have a learning facility in the heart of the neighborhood, which only aids Sunnyside’s continued effort in affecting its image and quality of life in this predominantly ethnic neighborhood.”

The new STEM building represents a major step forward in expanding educational access, strengthening local opportunity, and supporting Sunnyside’s long‑standing commitment to youth development and community pride.
