As NAU's 11th president (1957-1979), Dr. J. Lawrence Walkup transformed a small teachers college into a multifaceted public institution.

🪓 Under his administration, Arizona State College (ASC) became Northern Arizona University in 1966.

🏗️ To address the need for an indoor stadium, Walkup launched an ambitious project to construct an “ensphere” (a.k.a. “the dome”)

👏 Opening in 1977, the Skydome was the world's largest clear-span timber dome.

📚 Under his leadership, NAU’s academic program expanded significantly, offering 152 degrees and specializations.

🌲 Dr. J. Lawrence Walkup was a very active member of the Flagstaff Community.
