Balance, weight stepping... Circle of Eight Boxing was established in Flagstaff Arizona by our system Circle of Eight in 1923.. 100 years ago... In 1935 ,Circle of Eight changed the name to Sunnyside Boxing... Because, one of our coaches passed away in 1935... His name was Sunny Black .. He had lived in Sunnyside , New York... During the Civil war in I863 he lost his right arm and right leg... Everyone started calling him Sunnyside..On January 13th 1935 .. he passed away...Circle of eight took him back to Egypt, where his family was originally from.... When Sunny Blacks family migrated from Egypt .. they first settled in the Black forest of Germany... where his family adopted the name Black.. Sunny wasn't his real name.....His family escaped Egypt, because of who his family was related to...His mother started calling him Sunny , because he was always so happy...So, history has it in our system .. He was Sunny Black..... That is the only reason all of our gyms world wide were changed to Sunnyside Boxing... Over the years , when our members went to war and were killed in action.. Circle of Eight , would cover our gyms in Black.. Closing our Doors to the public.. and when our families had some time to heal , we would open again... This happened with World War two,, Korean War , Vietnam war .. After,the Vietnam war,we didn't open back up to the public .. One of our Brothers In Flagstaff was killed in Vietnam. His name was Jeff Wright.....We kept our gyms shielded in black ... Under Sunny Black...As time moved on and folks learned to live with their losses.. Sunnyside Boxing was used by other gyms .without their knowledge of where the name Sunnyside had come from... We , never indulge our identity.. In fact , We would offer our services and help them out in any way we could, giving them donations.And, Still ,to this day ,we still offer our services to other gyms ,that are our competition...
And, always keeping our identity silent... It wasn't until a few years back , there was a gym , that was using our name of our Sunnyside... .. for some reason they changed their name to impact Boxing ..Impact Boxi ng was a top notch boxing gym, With some of the best fighters and coaches like owner and head coach Mike Alonzo ..he was a top notch boxing coach....once we found out, Mike wasn't using our coach's name anymore. . Circle of Eight , reclaimed our teachers name ..in 2008 This gym became a pilot gym.. We only take on and train 12 students a month ,give or take...We have proudly displayed Sunnyside as our history to Sunnyside Boxing , ever since... Sunny Black was Egyptian. He descended from royalty... He volunteered into the civil war in Massachusetts,Military started recruiting African-American,for military units in the North, began recruitment in February 1863, one month after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation..Today,.We honor his name,Sunny Black , and take pride in displaying his name everyday on our banner ,and in our teaching ...He lives through our students each time they throw a punch and learn to control themselves...... Sunny Black.. Sunnyside Boxing....This is Chris Hardeen.. he's one of our coaches.. Chris is the great nephew of Houdini... Chris's fight record is 169 fights.....

This is the first picture of our book ,Pascal wrote, telling of Mr. Caddo.. and others Pascal has written about... Each series had eight books written about each person's journeys as they dream... Mr. Caddo and Pascal are the illustrators to all the stories,....And also.. Pascal has been writing the history of C08 stories that have been passed down through the centuries in all the techniques and languages of C08...,for the past 40 years... he's written 22 books, non are published.. tells of every step taken from 5000 years to present ,and the life lived by one student at a time until it's passed on to the next and the next life ..Pascal is writing up to our present day.., . he's hoping to be finished ,sometime in the near future ...God willing...

At Sunnyside .. We go out and gather Cotton root..So,we can teach doll carving ..... We teach how to carve the 365 figures .. with the history,the names that are associated with each one.. and why they hold these names.. what powers they hold..and how and why our C08 history had passed this down from person to person , born into our C08 tribe for centuries.... Sunnyside Boxing ,using the sweet science of the human anatomy.To its benefit,to knowledging up our beginning boxers..Showing , demonstrating, teaching new boxers how the rhythm of the body...this is one of our coaches demonstrating how the body will follow through .. just as long as the mind is sure and positive... When he struck these bricks it made an extremely loud pop.. that made all of our ears ring ... When he pulled his fist back the bricks settled in the position you see here... He said .. learning to know, when and where to apply yourself is the answer to almost everything... His demonstration was to see if he could break all the bricks ... Yet, none would fall.... if he had hit through passing past the last brick . They would hall fallen... His motion was to break all at the same time by not pushing through... He stopped his strike, by the way the bricks sounded.. the clap was all the bricks slapping against each other.. That loud clap of the bricks ... He stopped his pressure... The bricks settled into their own weight .. that ended up supporting each other , as if it was one..... This picture was taken 40 years ago , at a demonstration at Mount Elden Middle school, in Flagstaff Arizona... We teach to strike this hard.. to put your hands through 24" of bricks... Yet.. we can never hit someone with this type of power.. We , do not hit in the ring or street with this ability.... it would break all bones we hit.. or do much worse damage... So, we learn to harness this type of punching.... Knowing you have the ability to do something , doesn't mean you have to use it..... Our system is not about showing off how great a person is in this system of martial arts...It's about doing just the opposite ..by not bringing any attention to ones abilities.. that,they have spent 50 ,60 ,70, years developing perfecting... That is the beauty of Martial Arts .. It's knowing you have it...and , hopefully never have to use it...
