We are all sending love and healing to Tony’s family & friends! Flagstaff lost one of our greats of local music and a cherished community member.

On February 20, 2026 Tony Norris gently journeyed across brighter fields to golden shores where he is finally free of the pain and struggles of his last days. He will forever be remembered for his warmth, incredible talents and loving support he freely lavished on the many lives he touched, including those of countless musicians he fostered. As a primary founder of Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music and a key figure in the development and growth of The Flagstaff Folk Festival and Pickin’ in the Pines Bluegrass Festival, our organization is deeply grateful to his legacy. He will be missed here on Earth. Yet we expect he is somewhere spinning tales, singing around a celestial campfire, and lighting up eternity the way that only he could (possibly in a custom-made Santa Claus suit!). The Norris Clan invites you to Save the Date for a Celebration of Life for Tony on March 29, 2026 at the Orpheum Theater from 2 pm – 5 pm. Stay tuned for more details.

A participatory workshop in relaxation through creative expression with color and sound.
Based on the legendary Primordial Light Show, we project vividly colored forms moving in water to accompany spontaneously created music played on a collection of instruments from a variety of world cultures such as gongs, crystal bowls, wind instruments, tuned percussion and string instruments from the Indian musical tradition (sitar, surbahar). We will provide opportunities for creative participation through movement, visual art and sound creation.

The event will be facilitated by Johnny and Carmen Marcus, who have been performing the Cosmic Primordial Light Show since 1977 in México, Europe, Israel and Egypt and sincero 2015 in Northern Arizona.

One of our string teachers is currently accepting new students!

Hi! My name is Katelin Makowsky, and I am currently taking in more violin and piano students! I recently just graduated from Northern Arizona University with a dual bachelors degree in both Violin Performance and Instrumental Music Education, as well as being mentored in Suzuki Violin Pedagogy.
I have been teaching at Flagstaff School of Music as a private violin and piano instructor since September 2023 and have been a guest clinician in many Arizona schools!

I teach a wide range of students with different backgrounds and interests, and my main teaching philosophy is to create a safe and nurturing environment for all students to experience how to appreciate music! I want anyone who steps into my studio to express themselves in a comfortable setting so that mistakes can be made while learning, and I aim for my students to be involved, have opportunities, and strive for a high level of individual performance in my studio! My ultimate goal is for students to leave Flagstaff School of Music feeling like they have learned something!

If you are interested in learning more about me and my studio, please contact me at 928-366-8527 or at [email protected]
