Today, Friday, June 19th, is Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the day in 1865 in which the last enslaved African Americans held in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom, two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

We invite you to explore the Library's Juneteenth "ebookshelf" featuring a selection of ebooks that explore this history behind this holiday, with a particular focus on the voices and stories of enslaved Black people in the United States and the fight for freedom.

We extend our condolences to Dr. Miner's family and friends. He was a great supporter and collaborator with the Library.

It is with great sadness that we share the of the passing of our former Conference Co-Chair, Associate Professor Dr. Zachary Miner.

Dr. Miner was a beloved member of the Fitchburg State campus community since joining the Behavioral Sciences department in 2017 where he taught a variety of courses in sociology and criminology. An accomplished researcher, he focused on published scholarship exploring topics like police training, stigma, and fi****ms culture.

Dr. Miner took that passion for research and applied it to celebrating the research, scholarship, and creative endeavor or undergraduate students as the co-chair of the annual Undergraduate Conference held each spring. Dr. Miner served in this role from 2022 through 2025.

We are grateful for Dr. Miner's leadership in helping to shepherd the conference event back into an in-person event after the COVID-19 pandemic. The success of the current conference would not have been possible without his leadership and dedication. After stepping down from his role as co-chair, he continued to support the conference by serving as a judge and sharing his experiences and wisdom with the current co-chairs.
