Today is Walk & Roll to School Day!

Thousands of students, parents and educators across the country are celebrating the joy of active commuting — and we're reminding drivers to keep school routes safe:

🚸 Follow school zone speed limits and stay alert near bus stops.
👁️ Look for children walking or biking, especially when turning at intersections.
📱 Keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

Sadly, a pedestrian is killed every 74 minutes in traffic crashes.

Remember, at some point in the day EVERYONE is a pedestrian:

🚶‍➡️ Follow the rules of the road
🚶‍➡️ Use crosswalks when available
🚶‍➡️ Walk on sidewalks when available

🚘 Look out for pedestrians and minimize blind spots
🚘 Be careful in hard-to-see conditions
🚘 Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks

Safe choices start young. Talk to the kids in your life about bicycle safety near tracks and trains. Offer some simple reminders: Only trains belong on tracks. Only cross at designated crossings and always expect a train. Visit oli.org/info/kids for more safety tips.

6-9 p.m. is one of the deadliest windows for pedestrians — right as most of us are driving home, picking up dinner or walking the dog.

The majority of pedestrian deaths in 2024 happened in the dark. Slow down and stay alert!

Historical data show pedestrian fatalities peak in October as daylight hours drop. 📈🚶‍♂️

Speed, distracted driving and low visibility are a dangerous mix:

🚗 Slow down.
🚗 Stay alert at crosswalks.

🚶‍➡️ Follow the rules of the road.
🚶‍➡️ Use a crosswalk when it's available.

The moment you step out of your vehicle, you become a pedestrian. 🚶‍➡️

For October's National Pedestrian Safety Month, we're reminding everyone that safety is a 2-way street:

👁️ Drivers: Scan crosswalks and stay focused — put the phone away.
👟 Pedestrians: Stay visible, use crosswalks and look both ways before stepping off the curb.
