This was written by my dear friend and assistant, Judy Bennett. Thank you so much for this tribute, because in my grief, my mind and body aren’t working too well. Get your handkerchiefs.

Some horses come into our lives for a season. Others leave hoofprints on our hearts forever.

Horse Sense lost its Queen.

For over 20 years, Velvet was so much more than Kari’s horse. She was her partner, her constant, and her best friend. Their bond was built over decades of trust, love, and countless memories that only the two of them could truly understand.

Anyone who spent time at the barn knew Velvet. She was a spicy thoroughbred with a big personality who demanded your respect and somehow stole your heart at the same time. She ruled the barn with confidence, and it just won’t feel the same without her.

Velvet touched so many lives. When ground work clinics happened at the barn, only the bravest of students would step up for a chance to handle the Queen. Those students learned so much from those experiences, even though Velvet’s riding days were over, she still had a life which was filled with purpose.

She made people laugh, kept everyone humble, and reminded us all that horses have personalities every bit as unique as our own. She also left her mark on the horses around her, becoming part of the rhythm and family of the barn that they all shared together.

Run free, beautiful girl. May you find endless green pastures, warm sunshine, and peaceful trails. Your reign as the Queen of Horse Sense may have come to an end here, but your legacy will live on in every story shared, every smile you inspired, and every heart you changed.

Rest easy, Velvet. You will always be loved, and you will never be forgotten.

A great show day at MLC Farm!
We traveled to Millbrook and took on the big farms of the region and certainly held our own! As a small boutique barn catering to the middle class, we showed we belong and are competitive at this level. I’m so proud of all my riders and horses!

Every class was enormous and fiercely competitive. No split classes here! The weather was cooperative and perfect for a horse show.

Carmella showed Copper in the Pre-Mini Stirrup and finished first in both classes! Champion and prizes were awarded to her and the saintly Copper. ❤️

I had 3 riders in the Mini Stirrup Division. Ailla rode Copper in all the classes of the division and came away with a 4th and 5th place.
Linda competed on Splash in the flat classes and got a 5th and 6th.
Emily went to her first horse show ever and competed on Charlie in 3 classes. Although, she didn’t earn any ribbons, her and Charlie were superstars in one of the largest divisions of the day and showed superior grace and sportsmanship. Horse showing is all about gaining experience and having fun and Emily is eager to get back in the show ring and do it again! What a fantastic attitude! 👍

Lorelei and Teddy competed in 3 classes of the Short/Long Stirrup Division and came away with 2 fifth place finishes in another huge division! I’m so proud of this team always showing up and working through the trials and tribulations that horse shows bring.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Michelle from MLC Farm for running an amazing and well run show! I met some truly wonderful trainers and staff who made the day friendly and fun.
Much thanks and gratitude to Judy and True Motion Equine Body Work for all her help in every way; keeping our horses happy and assisting me, Shea for being our barn photographer and helping in so many ways, Megan for always coming to help at horse shows and being an excellent staff member, Brian who took care of the farm while we were away, Danny for transporting our horses safely, and all the family members and barn supporters. The horses and I thank you! ❤️❤️❤️

Rose and her pony, Marley, had their first in-hand lesson today! Super job! 🎉👍😍
