This was a tough one! I worked on unpacking a single sixth grade reading standard for 6th grade. Hopefully the format will help some others who are working on tackling this same task at other grades. Feel free to send your feedback! My goal is to get through all of the essential reading standards for 6th grade this summer.

We've been working on text structures in my classroom. This set includes an anchor chart plus a few different activities. One focuses on Ancient Rome as that is our current focus in social studies.

Happy Friday! 😊 Hope your week has been a good one!
Note: Be forewarned…this has ZERO to do with teaching, but I was still 🤯 by this and can’t wait to see where teachers stand on this issue…

Before break, we read The Lightning Thief as a class. I created this journal for students to use as we read. We practiced writing three sentence summaries after each chapter - this really helped students work on choosing the most important parts. I also included sections for students to record new characters as they were introduced and new words. I added in spots for students to draw and record thoughts as we read.
Notetaking: The Lightning Thief
This journal has been designed to accompany your reading of The Lightning Thief.

One of our activities tomorrow will be looking at our NWEA scores and setting new reading goals for the semester. I created a goal setting page and ideas for students to use when planning how to improve as a reader.

We will be focusing on informational text after break, so I created an assortment of graphic organizers to help. I plan on using these for Scope and Newsela. I hope they help you, too!
