What's going on with my hen !! I check on my ladies that are setting on eggs every morning while doing my morning rounds. And to my horror I found one hen that didn't look quite right to me. I took her out of the nesting box and checked her over. After looking at her bottom I noticed she looked to have a vent prolapse. I've never experienced this before and started doing my research. This is what I found. Prolapse vent in chickens is an avian anomaly wherein a hen’s vent or cloaca is inverted and pushed to the outside of the body. Often characterized by a collection of red tissue hanging out of the hen’s posterior.
This particular hen is young and insist on setting on eggs. Her eggs her sisters eggs she doesn't care.
I take my girls out everyday for some outside the nest time. They need this time to eat, drink and stretch their legs. I've found the older more experienced girls don't need this special care. They will do it on their own.
I'm thinking she was underweight due to setting on the nest. Some of my girls will go immediately back to their eggs if I take them out. Silkies are one of the best moms. They will set on a rock if you let them 😂

❗Treatment
This is what I did to treat my girl.
I'm not a vet nor an expert. I simply done my research and totally went from there.
1st - I very carefuly cleaned her up. She had some poo on her and her feathers were wet all around her vent. I put her under warm running water and cleaned the area with antibacterial soap.

2nd - After doing more research. I prepared a warm episode salt bath just deep enough to set her down in but not get the rest of her body wet. After abt 15 minutes I took her out dried her off. She got busy cleaning all her feathers that were wet. It was super cute.

3rd - I bought some hemorrhoid cream and applied it to the prolapse. I did this a couple times a day.
After doing more research I bought some antimicrobial spray from my local Ace Barn. I stoped the cream and just did the spray. After a day or so I noticed the prolapse had returned to normal. It honestly looked better before applying the spray.

4th - In the mean time I kept her off the eggs she had been sitting on. I gave her vitamins in her water along with scrambled eggs and yogurt. She needed to build her strength up and put on some weight to avoid the prolapse form happening again.
I've attached pics of the medicine I used.
I read that once a prolapse happens it a very good change it will happen again.

🦆 I recently added a couple ducks to my flock. I want to share a couple things I've learned so far. This is from my own experience and all the research I've done. First in this post I want to talk about FEED !!

🥬 What do ducks eat ?
▪First NEVER Feed a Duck medicated feed.
They can die from some of the coccidiostats (drugs) that are used in the feed to prevent coccidiosis.
▪When I first brought my two adorable ducklings home they were around a week old. I fed them chick starter non medicated. They were in the same brooder with my chicks. This made it much eaier to care for and feed them. I don't think they even knew they were ducks. Also It's perfectly safe to feed them chick feed as long as its non medicated as I aleady mentioned.
▪Once they began to grow I started feeding them the same thing I feed my silkie chickens.
(Purina Flock Raiser Feed) It has 30% protein which is what I prefer for my silkies.
They love it and have no issues.
▪Ducks Need Grit- Not familiar with grits ?
It's simply ground up stone. Ducks don't have teeth and can't chew. The grit helps grind up the food in their gizzard.
▪I read they love greens, weeds, grains, vegetables and table scraps as long as their not too spicy. Guessing they don't do spicy.

🦆I gave mine some watermelon the other day, they weren't sure if they liked it or not.
Just kinda pecked at it. It was so cute.
On another occasion I was feeding my chickens some meal worms so I threw some in the duck pond to see what they would do. I was surprised when they went crazy trying to fish for them. They gobbled them up.

Next time I go to the pet store I want to buy them some feeder fish and put them in their pond for to chase after. I will definitely have my phone ready to video that 😊

I recently added a couple ducks to my madness.
What I've learned so far beside being super adorable. They love love love water. I know I know. Duh. But really its so cute how they get in the water lay down and just enjoy it. Best part is when they get out of the water & they wag their adorable little tails

I offen get asked do you need a rooster
for a hen to lay eggs.
The answer is no !!
A hen will typically lay and egg every 24.
Hen's will lay eggs regardless if they are in the company of a rooster or not..
🐥 With that being said if you want to have chicks you must have a roo to fertilize the eggs. It's always a good idea to keep a rooster around to protect your ladies as well.
And juat an FYI You can eat fertile eggs 😊

🐐 Fun Fact About Goats 🐐

Ever heard the saying goats will eat anything?
Nope think again!!
They are actually very picky eaters. They have very sensitive lips, which they use to “mouth” things in search of clean and tasty food. They often refuse to eat hay that has been walked on or lying around loose on the ground.
