Subject: Important Parent Notice: Scam and Phishing Emails
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want to make you aware of an increase in scam and phishing emails that may appear to come from the school district, a school employee, or another trusted source.
These emails may ask you to:
Click on a link or open an attachment
Provide personal, financial, or account information
Purchase gift cards or send money
Change payment or banking information
Respond urgently to a request
Please use caution when receiving unexpected emails. If an email seems unusual, asks for money or personal information, or creates a sense of urgency, do not click on links or open attachments until you have verified that the message is legitimate.
Please remember that school district employees will not ask parents or students to purchase gift cards or send money through an unexpected email request.
If you receive a suspicious message that appears to come from the district or one of our schools, please contact the school or district office directly using a known phone number rather than responding to the email.
A Note About These Emails
These scam emails are not the result of a school district system hack, and we have no information indicating that compromising student or staff information has been released through our district systems.
Public school email addresses and other information that are public records can be obtained by individuals outside of the district. Scammers may then use those publicly available email addresses to send fraudulent messages.
Receiving one of these emails does not mean that your personal information has been compromised. The greatest risk occurs when a recipient clicks on a suspicious link, opens a malicious attachment, responds to the message, or voluntarily provides personal or financial information.
Please Talk With Your Students
We ask parents to take this opportunity to talk with their students about scam emails, text messages, and internet safety.
As a school district, we cannot monitor every incoming email or message sent to every student, parent, or staff member. We discuss internet safety with our students at the beginning of each school year, but it is important that these conversations continue at home as well.
Please remind your students:
Never share passwords or personal information online.
Never provide financial information to someone online unless you know exactly who you are dealing with.
Do not click suspicious links or open unexpected attachments.
Do not respond to messages that seem threatening, urgent, or unusual.
Never share compromising photographs or information with anyone online.
When in doubt, ask a trusted adult before responding.
