With extreme heat warnings and a high heat index heading our way this week, it is time to step up and give our fair livestock projects some extra TLC. Remember, our animals rely on us to keep them cool, safe, and healthy when the temperatures spike!

Here is your Heat Wave Survival Checklist for the barn:
💧 WATER IS LIFE: Check water buckets and tanks multiple times a day. Animals drink significantly more in hot weather. Keep the water fresh, clean, and in the shade if possible—nobody wants to drink hot water!
💨 AIRFLOW: Ensure all barn fans are running, clean, and positioned safely out of reach of your animals. Open up doors and gates to maximize natural cross-ventilation.
🚿 COOL DOWN PROPERLY: If you are rinsing or washing your livestock to cool them down, remember to scrape the water off immediately! Leftover water on the coat can trap body heat like a blanket. Focus on rinsing their bellies and legs where major blood vessels are close to the skin.
🚫 LIMIT AGITATION: Avoid exercising, practicing showmanship, or moving your animals during the hottest parts of the day (usually 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM). Schedule your barn work for the early morning or late evening.
🍽️ FEED STRATEGICALLY: Digestion generates internal body heat. Try feeding earlier in the morning and later at night when it’s cooler so their bodies aren't working as hard during peak heat hours.

Know the Signs of Heat Stress:
Heavy, open-mouth panting or foaming
Lethargy or refusal to stand up
Loss of appetite
If an animal looks distressed, notify a parent, advisor, or vet immediately. Let’s work together to keep our projects safe and ready for the show ring!

Thank you to the students from Liberty-Benton Agricultural Education and FFA for delivering Meals of Hope to our office this week.

These students spent their Field Day packing 10,000 meals for our community, and we are honored to help distribute them to our partners fighting hunger right here in Hancock County.
