We celebrated National Bubble Gum day today. For history we learned gum is over 5,000 years old, with humans chewing birch bark tar in the beginning. First commercial gum was from 1848 and bubble gum was invented in 1928. We estimated the number of gum balls in different size jars. We measured to determine volume. We graphed favorite flavors. Science lesson was weighing gum before and after it was chewed, you might be surprised by the change. Letting gum soak in water vs 7up we learned that the gases in 7up protected the gum. We did creative writing by made up our own flavor and made a business plan for a gum stand. We finished with an art project of coloring our bubble or gum ball machine.

Kindergarten continues learning about Johnny Chapman (AKA Johnny Appleseed.). We went to Central Market where they taught us about different types of apples and the way they graft trees to create different varieties. There are 7,500 varieties of apples and 2,500 in the United States. We learned that they put apples to "sleep" to keep them from getting ripe before the stores are ready. In class, we found out apples have a star inside and that they float. We planted apple seeds. We made fizzing apple picture to "wake up" our apples.

Thank you Hutchins Police Department for allowing us to visit. We enjoyed being in the squad car, meeting our dispatchers and learning all about your job. The goodie bags and snacks were extra special. You guys are the best.

I just saw that, according to an international survey, the teenage reading level has dropped to its lowest level in 25 years, with a 14 point drop since 2022. That's disturbing to me because youth and young adults seem to ignore choosing excellent books and ebooks - many free for their use in church and public libraries. Using a library also teaches responsibility because one must care for and return someone's property.
