Our team is proud to present FiveSquare, our submission to Whatcom Housing Alliance annual design competition.

While we always knew we could create a project that looked beautiful on presentation boards (I mean c’mon, pretty neat!), our team wanted to make sure the design we were presenting would be a truly feasible middle housing solution for a city like Bellingham.

As a team, we started the process by doing a full financial analysis looking at land costs, recent building costs, development and permitting costs with the City, and using that sum against what we believe to be achievable sale prices for entry-level homes.

FiveSquare is a five home development slated for a corner lot in the Columbia neighborhood, but could translate to any average 50’x100’ lot in a single-family neighborhood. It was designed to look almost like one single, large Craftsman home that would fit in in a typical PNW city.

The homes each would be privately-owned with proposed sale prices below market rate for Bellingham. Each unit is designed with the right space and comforts that could appeal to all of the types of folks (couples, young families, retirees, ect.) that are looking for middle housing forms but are priced out of single-family homes.

We’re proud of the work we put into this project and are glad for the conversations these competitions always create within our community.

A few years ago, M & M were living in the Arizona heat and looking for a way back to the Pacific Northwest. After looking statewide for a new home, a Zillow listing for a wooded Infill lot abutting the Whatcom Falls Park caught their attention.

As it goes, despite not planning to build originally, they found that designing a custom home gave them the opportunity to get the full package of what they wanted and needed from what they hope will be their forever home. The house works with the wooded site, tucked into the slope and opening toward the park, offering space for an expansive deck to enjoy the nature beyond.

Completed in 2025, this 2,234 sqft home adds a contemporary flare the suburban neighborhood, and more importantly, provides our clients with a place to root in the PNW.

The busy build season continues with a site visit to the DADU project in the Columbia neighborhood. Clocking in at just under the 1,000 square foot limit for accessory dwelling units, this is planned to become the main residence on a site shared with an existing 652 square foot single-level home. The builders dream is to make this a property that could be shared between a young family, and grandparents.

We’re excited to present this ADU project — a prime example of the thoughtful infill housing that Bellingham needs more of.

Our client (a builder) is transforming a single lot in Bellingham’s Columbia neighborhood into a multigenerational family property. The plan pairs a gut-renovated 1906 single-story home with this new 996 S.F. ADU. The intention is to create separate, but connected spaces for grandparents and a young family.

The construction has just begun, and will be excited to share more about this project as it comes into reality.

Had a chance to drop by the construction site of a very unique residence going up in Bellingham. The owner is a dedicated pickleball player…so dedicated that she wants her own indoor court to practice year-round.

The court requires tall ceilings, and the crew was just starting to raise the 23’ tall walls last week.

P.S. check out the organization of the base plates that the site lead implemented — we’re always impressed to see such clean and organized build sites.

The days go slow but the weeks go fast on the job site. In just the last eight weeks the Port Townsend Hotel went from slab to a fully framed second floor.

The crews have been treated to spectacular views of the Juan De Fuca Straight and have been keeping time with the Ferries comings and goings across the street.
