I had a tiny human in my classroom who would run up to another kiddo and hit or push them, and then he would laugh. We would intervene and stop the behavior, but it kept happening. We started doing detective work to figure out: When was this happening? Was there a pattern? What was he trying to communicate?

After some observation we noticed that this only happened when he was dysregulated. When we were able to meet his needs and build in proactive regulation throughout the day, we saw the behavior stop.

When we see big behaviors or kiddos shutting down it can be a signal to us that their nervous system is dysregulated. This means they no longer have access to their whole brain. It’s not that they know what they should or shouldn’t do and are just ignoring it, it’s that they aren’t in control of their body in the moment.

We cannot have self control without self regulation. We spend the early years co-regulating, bringing the calm to support their regulation. In doing so we are able to help kiddos build awareness of what it feels like when their body is out of control and then how to regulate their system.

This takes practice and consistency. When you notice their dysregulation and meet them with your own dysregulation it’s a downward spiral with no one using higher level thinking. When you notice their dysregulation and focus on connecting with them to help them regulate the nervous system, then we are cooking!

What challenges does this bring up for you?

Sometimes babies can eat a lot. Because they triple in size in the first year of life! Toddlers, however, may eat very tiny amounts of food. Less than babies, even. Because they aren't growing as much.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
This is why the most powerful thing you can do with your little one is to let them decide whether to eat and how much. Don't push them to eat. Just watch them decide how much to eat.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Maybe your little one eats the plate on the left some days. That's okay. It's also okay if your child eats two bites at a meal and is done. It's normal. It's normal. It's normal.⁣⠀
