Doryoku (努力) is a fundamental principle in Japanese martial arts that means continuous effort, disciplined striving, and sincere hard work. It teaches that true progress does not come only from talent, but from steady daily practice, patience, repetition, and the willingness to continue even when improvement is slow. In martial arts, Doryoku is seen in repeating basics, refining kata, correcting mistakes, and maintaining discipline over a long period of time. It also includes mental effort, improving character, controlling emotions, and developing perseverance. Through Doryoku, a practitioner understands that real growth in both technique and spirit is built gradually through consistent and sincere effort.
