It's been an incredible launch into the year at HLA.

Our prayer focus today is for our parents! Raising kids is a big calling, and God never meant for anyone to do it alone. Thank Him that Hillcrest is more than a school; it's a community of families. Pray for the friendships that start in carpool lines and on sideline bleachers this year, and pray that every parent finds encouragement here as students make lifelong friendships and build a deep trust in the Lord at Hillcrest.

What a night ahead! Back-to-School Night at the Lower School this afternoon, then the All School Picnic at 5:30: every grade, every family, one lawn. Pray for full tables and new introductions, and thank God for a school where preschool parents and senior parents share the same picnic. Pray tonight is the night new families start to feel like old ones.

It's day 25 in our 30 days of prayer. Thanks for joining us in praying for the start of school.

Join us in thanking God today for every family that chose Hillcrest this year. For many of them, tuition is a real investment, made in faith that a Christ-centered education is worth it. Pray God provides abundantly for these families, and pray this year proves their investment right a hundred times over.

Throwback Thursday – Makin' A Splash - Soccer 2017

With another soccer season getting underway at Hillcrest, we thought it was the perfect time for a little soccer Throwback Thursday. This video is evidence that some of the best soccer memories are not reflected on a scoreboard, but in the experiences outside of games.

Like running full-speed down a hill after a rainy practice just to see who could make the biggest splash! Moments like these remind us that being part of a Hillcrest team is about so much more than games, wins and losses. It’s about the friendships, the laughter, the inside jokes, the hard practices, the bus rides, and the memories that stick with you long after graduation.

And at Hillcrest, it’s also about growing together in faith. Through the challenges, victories, disappointments and everyday moments of being part of a team, students have the opportunity to grow—not just as athletes, but as people and as followers of Christ.

Soccer alumni, we want to hear from you! What is one of your favorite Hillcrest soccer memories? A game? A teammate? A crazy practice? A road trip? Something that had absolutely nothing to do with soccer?

Share your memories in the comments and help us remember the moments that made being a Comet—and being part of a team—so special!

Earlier this week, Hillcrest teachers found themselves doing what teachers do best when they gather after a summer break: talking over one another, testing ideas, laughing at familiar classroom moments, and picturing the faces of students who will soon fill the halls. Their smiles were electric and their voices raised to fill classrooms that were quiet a week earlier. They gathered back together for the start-of-school in-service training to refuel and refocus for another incredible year in the lower school.

The theme for the start-of-school training was simple: We don’t repeat training. We revisit truth. One of those truth foundations is the Four Habits of the Heart: attentive, obedient, respectful, and responsible. Those words are familiar to teachers and students alike, but this week's training pushed teachers to look beneath them. From that training, the the room grew animated, as teachers began working through their PRIME training: Praise, Reflect, Incentivize, Demonstrate, and Enthusiasm. The exercises in this lesson seemed small at first. Engage a student who usually struggles with transitions, quietly closes a book, pushes in a chair, and gets in line without being reminded. What happens next? In the rush of a school day, moments like that disappear easily because trouble is often louder than quiet obedience. The disruptive student commands attention while the student making a good choice can pass almost invisibly through the room.

PRIME asks teachers to reverse that pattern by becoming deliberate observers of what is good, and then provide students with specific praise. It's an important approach to students and classroom culture at Hillcrest.

Teachers participated in other training throughout the day, working together to dial in the ways God is calling them to lead their classrooms and the school, forming hearts and minds that love and worship the Lord.

It's orientation day for our 9th-12th graders! And as they work through new schedules, new classes, and for our freshmen and transfer students, a whole new chapter, we ask you to join us in prayer as we continue our 30 days of prayer to the first day of school.

Pray today for these students, that they walk out of orientation today already excited for the first day, and thank God for a high school where students are known by name.

Continuing our 30 days of prayer today, our 6th-8th graders came through the doors for orientation this morning! New lockers, new schedules, new teachers to meet. Pray for these students who had a great first look at the year ahead, and thank God for this age: curious, funny, and growing fast. Pray this is the year they discover something they love.
