"Budaejjigae" is one of the most popular ones among Korean Stews. It is also called "Army Stew" because it has its own history of the origin. Can you make a guess? The history goes back to the Korean war... When the Korean war happened in 1950, the U.S.A army came to South Korea to defeat the North Korean and Chinese army and to prevent the communism from dominating Korean peninsula. At that time, the American soldiers put the hams and sausages that they usually have for meal into the stew and mingled it with Korean ingredients such as hot pepper paste and tofu, etc. This stew mixed with many ingredients from Korean recipe and American recipe became the "Budaejjigae" and is also called "Army Stew."

Our first formal cooking event did happen at ISS classroom in Holcombe hall today!! Today's menu was "budae jjigae" which has an interesting history regarding its origin. Also named as "Korean Army Stew," budae jjigae was invented by Korean and American soldiers during the Korean war. By putting some ingredients including hams and sausages into the spicy stew which can be regarded as a symbol of Korean food, we could cook budae jjigae together! Served with steamed rice, it was so tasty !😋 😋
