Lona Robertson, professor and associate dean of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, was honored with the 2025 Friend of IDEA Award.
She was celebrated for committed leadership in the academic alliance.
Established in 1994, IDEA is a consortium of 20 accredited universities from across the United States, offering online courses, certificates, and degrees in agriculture and human sciences.
The honor came at the annual meeting of IDEA on Feb. 24 in Kansas City, Missouri. Sissy Osteen, associate professor and department head emeritus at Oklahoma State University, and Dorothy Durband, associate dean for academics & faculty and professor at Texas Tech University, nominated Robertson.
Osteen praised Robertson’s instrumental role in Oklahoma State University’s involvement in early IDEA programs. Although Robertson departed OSU, she quickly picked up her commitment to IDEA’s expansion at the University of Arkansas.
Osteen also noted that Robertson’s, “level of dedication to IDEA has been exhibited by her long-term commitment and support of the programs, the instructors in the programs, the staff members at IDEA, the department heads at various universities, her fellow administrators, and her fellow board members.”
Durband stated “When I think of IDEA’s ‘one for all and all for one’ motto, Lona exemplifies this through her collaborative approach and dedication to shared leadership. As Chair, she has fostered an environment of mutual respect and cooperation. Her efforts to respect the many institutional needs and variances have been crucial in creating a cohesive community of administrators.”
In addition to her many roles at the U of A, Robertson serves as chair of the IDEA Human Sciences Board. She also serves on the IDEA Agriculture Board of Directors.
Robertson’s commitment to IDEA has been both impactful and essential, fostering meaningful progress and positive change within her field.
The U of A participates in one human sciences program and one agriculture program through the consortium. To take part in the inter-institutional programs, a student chooses one partner as a home institution for enrollment, transcript, and graduation.
