The Jean Tyson Child Development Study Center is a NAEYC-accredited childcare center and a University of Arkansas lab school. We serve children between the ages of 8 weeks and 5 years (pre-K). We work with each child, individually, using empirically proven best practices. Our goal is to create a loving environment, which has been a hallmark of our program for decades, and provide opportunities for children to grow and develop in all areas of self.

"Do we get to keep these?!"

Last week, architecture students from put their toy designs to the test in our preschool classrooms. The students observed unexpected ways the children engaged with the toys, different methods of connecting the pieces, and which elements were intriguing to the children.

We love to see new designers collaborating with young minds. We wonder...what new ideas will come from collaborations like this?

The snow-covered playground became our canvas, using paintbrushes and eye droppers to color the snow. One child brought a dropper to the fence and squirted the water color onto the Infant/Toddler playground. "They're going to be so surprised when they see the paint in the snow!"

A few of our very own participated in last night's Educator Night Out at the Scott Family Amazeum, where educators within our NWA community gathered to learn from each other through play. Allyson, Anna, and Caitlyn presented an atelier of storytelling through light, reflection, and shadow, demonstrating meaningful ways for children to explore these themes- inviting imagination, collaboration, and reflection. We were so honored to connect and collaborate with our fellow educators, sharing experiences and ideas.

One of our toddler teachers, Haylee, brought her pet gecko, Tinkerbell, to school to share with her class. Haylee and her co-teacher, Lilly, wondered how the children might respond. How would they engage with this small creature? Would they be excited? Nervous? Indifferent?

All of the children gathered around to see the gecko in Haylee’s hands, but one child seemed especially interested. She bravely reached out towards Tinkerbell, and Haylee guided her hand to gently pet the gecko’s back. A look of amazement spread across her face as she felt the bumpy texture of Tinkerbell’s skin. Tinkerbell crawled up Haylee's shoulder, and the child followed, watching in fascination. When it was time to say goodbye, she smiled and waved at her new friend.
