The Jean Tyson Child Development Study Center is a NAEYC-accredited childcare center and a University of Arkansas lab school. We serve children between the ages of 8 weeks and 5 years (pre-K). We work with each child, individually, using empirically proven best practices. Our goal is to create a loving environment, which has been a hallmark of our program for decades, and provide opportunities for children to grow and develop in all areas of self.

What is the importance of mark making during infancy?

Mark making is a powerful concept as children discover the ability to leave evidence of their exploration and thinking behind. What is each mark saying? If educators pay close attention, they will begin to see the intention behind the tiniest of marks.
Offering a variety of textures and materials when setting up mark making invitations for infants gives them the opportunity to investigate what it means to "make a mark". Building this foundation early on leaves children feeling comfortable and prepared as they explore their relationship with mark making, story telling, and expression.

One of our favorite materials here are STABILO because of their chunky grip and versatility. They are perfect for the youngest of learners.

We are missing the bellybutton."

Together with a teacher, C worked for an extended period of time to create his Playdough Boy.

Playdough seems like a simple material that is fun to squish and manipulate but it doesn't leave a lasting impression or product. Or does it? Playdough can be very important to children who are trying something new and need a medium that provides forgiveness, where you can start again, and it doesn't have to produce a perfect result.

What happens when educators get messy and engage with children? What is the value of modeling the use of tools? How does their use develop over the course of time?

Reflecting on the transformation of each child's relationship with clay as they move through the center is a wonder. Metamorphosing from full-body sensory exploration as infants; to learning how to use tools as toddlers; all the way to precise strokes, slices, and placement as preschoolers.

Extended exposure to the language of clay creates a beautifully rounded relationship with the medium and an open-ended level of creativity.

A shared space in our building entitled, "The Commons", has been a hot spot as we begin the school year. Children from all over the building congregate here in small groups to investigate a number of different provocations that inspire creative problem solving.
One area full of tubes, wind tunnels, pulleys, balls, and scarves prompts children to explore the question, "How do you transport something from one place to another?".

The snow-covered playground became our canvas, using paintbrushes and eye droppers to color the snow. One child brought a dropper to the fence and squirted the water color onto the Infant/Toddler playground. "They're going to be so surprised when they see the paint in the snow!"
