University of Arkansas Department of Animal Science ranked #6 nationally for graduate earnings among animal science programs.🏆

According to recently released earnings data highlighted by the New York Times, University of Arkansas Animal Science graduates earned a median income of $56,136 four years after program completion, placing the program sixth among animal science programs nationwide. Graduates also earned $24,511 more than their high school graduate peers, highlighting the value of University of Arkansas Animal Science education.

This recognition reflects the success of our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and industry partners who help make Arkansas Animal Science a leader in education and workforce preparation.

From carcass to table!🥩

Students recently had the opportunity to learn from Kimberly Ratcliff of ratcliffpremiummeats during a hands-on meat science and culinary workshop. Participants explored beef cuts, cooking techniques, and product development before working in teams to create unique meat dishes. The workshop provided valuable hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of beef production from carcass to consumer.

🐖 Inside Swine Production!

In Swine Production, students get hands-on experience with the day-to-day management practices involved in raising healthy pigs. Recently, students practiced vaccinating and processing piglets while learning about proper handling, animal health and production practices.

Experiences like these give students the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom while building practical skills they can carry into careers in the swine industry.

The University of Arkansas Department of Animal Science welcomed University of Arkansas System President Jay B. Silveria for a tour of our programs and facilities. The visit was coordinated by Dr. Deacue Fields, Vice President for Agriculture, who joined President Silveria for the tour.

During his visit, President Silveria visited the horse barn and arena to learn more about the Ranch Horse Team before touring the Animal Science Abattoir, where hands-on meat science education and training take place.

We appreciate President Silveria and Dr. Fields taking the time to visit Animal Science and learn more about the programs and facilities that support our students’ education and development!

The University of Arkansas Department of Animal Science was pleased to welcome Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward and members of his team for a tour of our beef production and processing facilities.

Secretary Ward, Deputy Chief of Staff Rachel Smith, Animal Health Director and State Veterinarian Dr. Andrew Fidler and Field Veterinarian Dr. Richard McCarver first toured the Animal Science Abattoir before visiting the Savoy Unit to learn more about beef production.

We appreciate Secretary Ward and his team taking the time to visit Animal Science and learn more about the hands-on education, production and processing happening within our department!

Meet ANSC graduate student Jack Habjan, an M.S. student studying ruminant nutrition with a focus on beef stocker cattle.

Jack's research is exploring magnesium absorption and how different levels of potassium in the diet may impact absorption. His work focuses on better understanding grass tetany and ways to reduce its occurrence in beef cattle.

Jack was also recently recognized as a National Merit Scholar by the American Meat Science Association and as a Livestock Judging All-American.

We're proud to highlight Jack and the research he's contributing to the field of beef cattle production.

🐄 Cattle producers recently participated in the Beef Cattle Reproduction Workshop led by Ramiro Oliveira, Extension Beef Cattle Production Specialist.

Participants learned about breeding management, pregnancy diagnosis, animal selection, and reproductive technologies while gaining hands-on experience with blood sample collection and pregnancy testing techniques.
