The Department of Animal Science is at the 68th Annual Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association Convention & Trade Show in Fort Smith!

Dr. Kirsten Midkiff joined the Cattlemen’s College lineup today, sharing insights on “Know Your Enemy: Ticks & Other Pests,” while faculty and students are representing the department throughout the convention and trade show.

ANSC had another big event this week! Arkansas Animal Science Department well represented in Madison, WI at the annual American Society of Animal Science meetings.

🌾Drought and summer heat can take a serious toll on both cattle and the pastures they rely on.

As much of Arkansas continues to experience drought conditions, producers are encouraged to take proactive steps to protect herd health and forage resources. Fresh water, proper nutrition, shade, and thoughtful grazing management can all help reduce heat stress and support cattle during the summer months.

The Animal Science Department was proud to have our Meat Science students and faculty represent the department at the American Meat Science Association's 79th Reciprocal Meat Conference in Amarillo, Texas.

Our Meat Science Quiz Bowl team competed against 40 teams from across the country and advanced deep into the tournament. Congratulations to team members Cason Frisby, Emily Longwith, Madison Blank, Victoria Castillo, and Anna LeRoux, along with coaches Jeremy Summers, Sara Johnson, Cameron Catrett, and Ashley Rivera, on an outstanding performance.

Members of the Setyabrata Lab also showcased their research through poster presentations. Congratulations to Cameron Catrett for earning 3rd place in the Ph.D. Research Competition and to Cason Frisby for earning 2nd place in the Undergraduate Research Competition. Cason was also recognized with the Undergraduate Scholastic Achievement Award and the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award.

Congratulations to all of our students and faculty for representing the University of Arkansas with excellence through research, competition, and professional engagement!

Congrats on our Alumnus Aaron Mahan for his new position at Green Forest High School!

Let’s welcome our new Agri teacher!

My name is Aaron Mahan, and I'm excited to be joining Green Forest High School as one of the Agricultural Education teachers and FFA Advisors. I grew up on a farm in Huntsville, Arkansas, where my passion for agriculture began. I earned my Associate of Science in Animal Science from Northern Oklahoma College and my Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from the University of Arkansas, where I competed on nationally recognized livestock judging teams.

Outside of the classroom, I manage the club lamb division at Mahan Farms. I also enjoy hunting and have a background in competitive shooting sports. I love helping students grow through agriculture, leadership, and FFA, and I'm incredibly excited to become part of the Green Forest community. I can't wait to build relationships with my students, fellow staff, and community, and I'm looking forward to a great year together.

The Careers for Arkansas Livestock Leaders (CALL) Program kicked off their 2026 CALL Tour with a Lunch & Learn with Bumpers College Faculty hosted by Animal Science Department. 🐂🐖The CALL Program is made up of 22 high schoolers in Arkansas 4-H selected for their interest in future careers in the agriculture field. The Lunch & Learn allowed the youth to connect with faculty and learn about college and career pathways to help them reach their goals.
