Don’t strain the drain.
A typical septic tank can only hold 1,000 to 1,500 gallons of water. Anything more than that might result in contaminated water coming to the surface.

To cut down on your usage:

✅ Regularly check for leaks in your faucets, toilets and appliances.
✅ Add in low flow faucets and showerheads.
✅ Look for appliances with that ENERGY STAR or WaterSense ratings.
✅ Space out doing laundry.
✅ Monitor for increased rain.

Don’t overload the commode.

💧 If you want to keep your septic system healthy, don’t overload the commode.

Totally fine:
✅ Human waste (three P’s: p*e, poo and (toilet) paper)
✅ Toilet paper

Things to avoid:
❌ Excess cooking grease or oil
❌ Coffee grounds
❌ Large volumes of cleaners like bleach that adversely affect the bacteria breaking down waste in your septic system.
❌ Non-degradable products, including feminine hygiene products, dental floss, diapers, cat litter, etc.

What can and can’t go into a septic system? Great question!

Today, Stephanie Butcher and Gary Hawkins of the UGA Extension water team review some of the most common do’s and don’ts when it comes to flushing or washing something down the drain:

Shield the field.

When waste leaves your home, it heads to your septic system… but then what?

On day two of SepticSmart Week, Stephanie Butcher and Gary Hawkins of the UGA Extension water team review common distribution systems and explain how to protect your drainfield. Check out some quick tips below:

❌ Don’t drive heavy machinery or cars over your drainfields.
❌ Don’t park over your drainfield.
❌ Don’t plan any deep-rooted vegetation over your drainfield.
✅ Driving most lawn mowers over the distribution field is just fine.
✅ Consult a septic service professional to advise you of the proper distance for planting trees and shrubs.

It’s SepticSmart Week, and UGA Extension’s water experts are here to help you keep your system healthy.

Today, Stephanie Butcher and Gary Hawkins of the UGA Extension water team are answering some of the most common questions associated with septic systems.

▪️ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺? If you live in a rural area, you probably do. Your local Extension agent can let you know for sure!
▪️ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸? A septic system separates solids from oils and fats in water before distributing that water back into the soil where it is filtered.
▪️ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗱? Have your system inspected every three years and pumped every three to five years.

Archery Club had their first week of practice and our turn out was amazing! We currently have 39 archers and 5 volunteer coaches! We still have space for 11 more youth in grades 4th-12th to join the club! 🏹

Archery Club is a volunteer ran club, and boy do these guys do it all! From partner communication and building stands to repairing all our equipment and setting up practice each week, our volunteers do it all! We are thankful to see the program growing in Fayette because of you 🍀

We traveled to Japan this week and learned how to roll sushi, new knife skills, and more on food safety 🇯🇵

Ms. Cara shared photos from her visit to the country and discussed cultural norms with the kids while Sam, a graduate of the Fayette County 4-H program, came back to lead yesterday’s cooking portion! 🍣

Sam joined our program at 13 years old and was super shy, so to see him grow and come out of his shell through Adventure Clubs and Senior Extreme Camps has been a blessing to see! Sam graduated high school at 16 and attended culinary school, so having him come back and teach our next generations of 4-H’ers was awe-inspiring! Our office is proud to see the young man you have become and we wish you luck on all your new adventures! 💚🍀

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

4-H had their first Homeschool Club meeting of the Fall on Thursday and we had a massive turn out! With 45+ kids in attendance, we decided to add a new timeframe for our older kids to best fit their needs! Email [email protected] for more details! 🍀

This month’s theme was “Garden Galore” and we had 4 amazing Master Gardeners, Mrs. Michelle, Jennifer, Kristen, and Mr. Harry help lead our stations! Mrs. Jennifer taught about pollinators and led a pollinator census, Mrs. Michelle taught about how to grow garlic and helped youth plant their own, and Mrs. Kristen and Mr. Harry along with Ms. Charlotte helped youth make their own seed paper for the Spring! Ms. Cara led an olive oil & garlic bread tasting station for 4-H’ers! 🪴

4-H loves our volunteers, staff, and homeschool 4-H’ers! Thank you all for a great first club meeting 💚
