As we celebrate Independence Day, did you know that the story of The United States of America and the story of the Methodists grew up together?
As the new nation found its footing, so did a new expression of the Methodist movement. In those early years, few people shaped that story more than Francis Asbury. Refusing comfort and choosing the saddle instead, he rode thousands of miles to bring the gospel to communities across the young republic, helping establish what would become one of the largest spiritual movements in America.
At Methodist University, Asbury’s legacy is woven into our story. His image appears on our University seal, and each year “Asbury on horseback” rides onto campus, a living reminder that faith is not meant to stand still. It is meant to go where people are!
As we give thanks for our nation’s history this Fourth of July, may we also remember those whose faith helped shape its character, and may we continue riding forward with courage, conviction, and grace.
Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸
