Today, August 8, we celebrate not just the day you were born in 1981, but everything you gave to tennis and to those of us who watched you.

310 weeks as World No. 1. 237 consecutive weeks on top a record that still feels untouchable. Five times the year-end No. 1. 103 ATP singles titles, 20 Grand Slams, 8 Wimbledon crowns, 5 US Opens, 6 ATP Finals. The numbers are staggering. But they’re not why we love you.

It was the grace. The one-handed backhand down the line. The quiet fire. The way you made the impossible look effortless, and the way you carried yourself whether you won or lost. You showed us that greatness and humility could share the same court.

In Switzerland you’re “the greatest and most successful” sportsperson in history. To the rest of us, you’re the standard the player we measure elegance, sportsmanship, and longevity by.

Thank you for the memories: the 2009 French Open, the 2017 Australian Open comeback, that Wimbledon final in 2019 where you proved at 37 that age was just a number. Thank you for making us believe in beauty in sport.

May this year bring you as much joy off the court as you gave us on it. Enjoy the day with Mirka, your children, and everyone lucky enough to call you family and friend.

Remembering Wrestling Legend Power Mike on His Birthday

Today, August 8, we honor the memory of Nigerian wrestling icon Michael Okpala - better known as Power Mike (August 8, 1939 - March 11, 2004).

A household name and retired undefeated World Heavyweight champion, Power Mike dominated the sport. In 1973 he defeated Lebanon's Ali Baba, and went on to best Johnny Kwango in Lagos. His list of victories also includes Power Jack, Joseph Kovacs, Judd Harris, John Tiger of Canada, and many other international stars.

Beyond the ring, he was a pioneer promoter.
Through Power Mike International Promotions, he brought global legends like Mil Mascaras, Dick
"The Bulldog" Brower, Buddy Rose, Michael Hayes, Mighty Igor, The Mongols, Carlos Colon, Chris Adams, and Thunderbolt Williams to Nigeria.

Power Mike passed away on March 11, 2004, at National Hospital, Abuja, after a long illness. He was 64.

Mike Okri is a renowned Nigerian Artist of international acclaim. When this versatile, no-fuss-no-fad crooner made his chart buster debut titled “CONCERT FEVER” in the 80s, it was a great phenomenon that ushered spice and change into the Nigerian Music Industry.

August 4, 1970.

The king of ghetto dance - also called ghetto - Daddy Showkey dominated the Ajegunle music scene in the late 1990s and helped put the sound on the map.

29 years ago today, Africa lost a musical genius
- the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Born October 15, 1938, Fela pioneered Afrobeat, a revolutionary sound fusing American Soul, Funk, and Jazz with African rhythms, chanted vocals, drums, horns, and percussion.

At his peak, he was hailed as one of Africa's most charismatic and challenging performers. AllMusic called him "a musical and sociopolitical voice of international significance." Fela used his music to speak truth to power, addressing national issues with unflinching honesty.

He passed away at 58 on August 2, 1997.

Remembering Onyeka Onwenu — The “Elegant Stallion”
31 January 1952 – 30 July 2024

Today we honor the life and legacy of Onyeka Onwenu, a true icon of African music, film, and public service.

Onyeka Onwenu passed away on 30 July 2024 in Lagos. She had just performed at the 80th birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. Shortly after her performance, she collapsed and was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She was 72.

True to her artistry, she left the stage on her own terms — giving her gift to the very end.

Onyeka wasn’t just a singer. She was a voice for a generation. With hits like One Love, You and I, Iyogogo, and Wait for Me with King Sunny Adé, she blended highlife, pop, and social commentary into music that moved both bodies and consciences. Her grace on stage earned her the nickname “Elegant Stallion.”

From Night of a Thousand Laughs to Nollywood classics like Half of a Yellow Sun and Lionheart, she brought dignity and depth to every role. She proved African women could be strong, complex, and timeless on screen.

Beyond entertainment, she was a journalist, broadcaster, politician, and activist. As DG of the National Centre for Women Development and Chairperson of Imo State Council for Arts and Culture, she fought for women’s rights, good governance, and cultural preservation. Her song Choices became an anthem for safe choices and women’s health.

Onyeka Onwenu showed us that art can entertain and still challenge a nation. She was elegant, fearless, and uncompromising — never afraid to speak truth to power. One year after her passing, her music still plays, her films still inspire, and her voice still calls us to One Love.

Rest well, Aunty O. Your stallion still gallops in our hearts. 🙏
