Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform the slaves of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Although it was only recently recognized as a federal holiday by the U.S. government, this has been a day of celebration and reflection in communities across the world for over 100 years.
Today, we take time to honor the struggles, essential contributions, and diverse experiences of the members of the African American community.
Visit https://juneteenth.uark.edu/ for a full list of events commemorating this important day. Events start tomorrow!

The University Libraries, Honors College and Division of Research and Innovation held an Undergraduate Research Week Poster Competition at the end of the spring semester with Lilli Martin claiming top honors in the Art and Design category.
Martin's winning poster was "Creating Adaptive Clothing for Dialysis Patients."
She was an honors student who graduated in apparel merchandising and product development last month.
"My undergraduate research has given me the experience to create a solution to a real-world problem," Martin said. "I've been able to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of the apparel industry and the needs of those in our community. Conducting my research has been an opportunity to help find solutions for those who are often looked over in the apparel industry and has helped me find a gap in the industry and has inspired me to fill that gap."

Happy Pride Month!
Pride Month is a month dedicated to celebrating and commemorating the (LGBTQ+) community and their achievements, culture and history. It is usually celebrated in June each year.
Pride Month also raises awareness of the issues and challenges that LGBTQ+ people face in different parts of the world.
Pride Month has its origins in the Stonewall riots, a series of protests for gay liberation that took place in New York City in June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn.
