Mission

The primary mission of the Department of Performing and Fine Arts is to produce graduates in the performing and fine arts – music, dance, theater, visual arts – that will be leaders in their respective fields and its advocate. The Department is also committed to building community through the arts by being a resource for performing and fine arts pedagogy, cultivating a climate where creativity flourishes, engaging the community with the arts, and making the arts accessible to all. The Department of Performing and Fine Arts will be the cultural and intellectual center for Fayetteville and its environs.

Our theatre program is looking for a strong keyboard/piano player, bassist, and drummer for our upcoming fall musical production that runs the first weekend of November. We are grateful for a life-giving visit from the inimitable Phylicia Rashad, thanks to friends from Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity, who worked out the visit. Ms. Rashad poured deeply into each of our students and we are greatful for her generosity of time and wisdom. Many, many thanks to Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity for making this possible. FSU Theatre is accepting donations of medium and large oriental/Persian/Asian rugs that are free of pet stains. We are also looking for a donated piano (in decent shape; old school/antigue preferred), and anything that might fit in a speakeasy.

Donations can be made by bringing items to the lobby of the theatre in the Butler Building on campus. Reach out to us here if you have questions.

Our theatre students took a walking tour of Black history in Scotland, learning about everyone from the first African soldiers arriving with the Roman army, to Black members of the Scottish court, to Joseph Knight, an African man whose court case affirming his freedom inspired the abolition movement in Pennsylvania and beyond, to Frederick Douglass who spent time in Edinburgh, to the Scots women who did fundraising and clothing drives for Harriet Tubman and those she rescued. After that, students visited Edinburgh Castle, where they learned about histories not often told.
