West Highland High School Fayette Alabama

West Highland High School Fayette Alabama Formal education for Blacks in Fayette began on April 20, 1925, when Matthew Freeman deeded a plot of land for a school. Mr. James W. Under the mandates the U.S.

The land was located in Newtonville in the southwest corner of Fayette County Alabama. The school remained there until 1937 when it was moved to the City of Fayette and called the Fayette County Training School. During its 12 years in Newtonville the school grew from a three- teacher school with a small enrollment to a six-teacher school with an enrollment of about 300 students. Students came from

all over Fayette County, with small number coming from Lamar County. Later, in 1947, the two-story block Elementary Building was erected. In the fall of 1960 a new modern school building was erected as the West Highland High School. The following year, 1961, a modern lunchroom facility was added. Beatty served as School Principal from 1948 until 1969. Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision, West Highland High School was phased out as of the commencement of the 1969-1970 school term
