THURSDAY: LU Students To Release Magazine on Prince Edward County School Closings, 1959-1964
Longwood University Departments of Art, English, History, the Cormier Honors College, and the Robert Russa Moton Museum announced Thursday, April 10, the publication of a new magazine, 10 Stories 50 Years Later. Working in teams of writers and photographers, students collected the personal stories of those who experienced the school closings. Each person interviewed offered their viewpoint regarding the impact of the closings at that time and in their later life. The publication is being produced to increase awareness and understanding of otherwise unrecorded events related to the resistance toward integrating public schools across the country.
Magazines will be available April 17, 2014 at Farmville Community Marketplace where photographs and text from each of the stories will be on display. University students involved in the publication’s production will be hosting a reception that evening from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm. Copies will also be distributed throughout Farmville, at Longwood University, at local stores and organizations. The goal of the magazine is to support the Moton Museum and help promote educational awareness of the history and events surrounding school closings in the late 1950s. The magazine is free.
The magazine is the second publication produced collaboratively by students in the Art department, English department, and Comier Honors College. “This is a combined project,” Assistant Photography Professor Michael Mergen announced, “that includes myself and the guidance of Assistant English Professor Heather Lettner-Rust and Associate History Professor Larissa Ferguson, and the talented Longwood University student writers and photographers. Each student can be proud of his or her contribution to the community.”
