Longwood Race and Ethnic Studies

The U.S. Race and Ethnic Studies program is Longwood University's newest academic minor offered to undergraduate students. Offering an interdisciplinary exploration of the concepts of race and ethnicity across the curriculum, the program investigates race and ethnic identities as social, cultural, historical, and material realities and explores the construction and maintenance of those identities in U.S. culture. Your generous donations to our program supports student programming and guest speakers. As our program continues to grow, we endeavor to offer scholarships to offset academic costs for our students. Dear RAES students,

Please check out these 2 *paid* summer internships with the National Park Service at the Booker T. Washington National Monument in Hardy, VA (near Roanoke). These are great opportunities to put Race and Ethnic Studies learning into practice, particularly if you are graduating this semester.

As some of you may know, Booker T. Washington was one of the most important leaders of the African American community in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The monument commemorates his place of birth. The internships run from May through August, 2022 and pay $600/week to cover living expenses.

Gain real world experience assisting the Interpretation and Resource Management staff at Booker T. Washington National Monument in providing educational opportunities for visiting public of all ages, caring for living exhibits such as farm animals and gardens that help tell Booker T. Washington's amazing story, and protecting treasured cultural and natural resources for future generations to experience, learn from, and enjoy!

This national treasure commemorates the birthplace of Booker T. Washington – America’s most prominent African American educator, orator, and influential statesman of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The park comprises 239 acres, including most of the to***co plantation's original 207 acres, as well as a recreated 1850's to***co farm with farm buildings. Demonstrations of farm life in Civil War Virginia help bring to life the setting of Washington's childhood. Visitors are invited to step back in time and experience firsthand the life and landscape of people who lived in an era when slavery was part of the fabric of American life.

Elwood's Cabinet food pantry is open this semester as a resource to students each Monday and Thursday from 6-8pm.
In addition to food, other items such as laundry detergent are also available.

Elwood's Cabinet is a collaboration between the Student Government Association and the Wesley Foundation (and led by students) and is located in the lower level of the Wesley Foundation building on High Street (across from French Hall and between the Weyanoke Hotel and Farmville United Methodist Church).

There is no cost to students--they only need to bring their Longwood ID. Student names are collected, but only used if needed for COVID contact tracing (this has not been needed since COVID began).
