For Instructors and Singers: Important Information on the False Cords

Below is a very clear drawing of the true vocal folds and notice right above them are the false cords. It is important for instructors and singers to know about the false cords and how to avoid employing them.

Several years ago I taught a dramatic soprano who was 'trained' to use the false cords on a 'squeak tone' which was very very high in pitch. This tone will NOT integrate with the rest of the voice and the sound is produced by squeezing the throat and therefore the false cords. It took FOUR YEARS of breath release work to correct this issue for this singer and in some singers it is irreversible.

Characteristic Tone

A high 'squeal or squeak tone' is usually quite dangerous. Once the false cords learn to produce this tone, it can take years and years to correct. The false cord response can become so automatic that it engages without thought, so the singer cannot keep it from coming into the high range.

The dramatic soprano I mentioned earlier would attempt to sing a high C and the voice would squeak and jump an octave higher, often out of tune. It destroyed her ability to sing most repertoire for many years.

Why Would Anyone Teach This?

The inexperienced instructor may think that extremely high pitches are a great thing for a singer. While developing the high range on equalized breath flow is important, I have seen several singers trained on the false cords when the instructor thought they were increasing the high range. This training actually destroys the singer ability to control the high range.

Final Thought: If a singer deals with the release of the sternocleidomastoid muscles and works toward equalized air flow, the false cords will not engage. So to keep the voice safe singers need to address finding the supple soft SCM's and equalized air flow as an insurance of healthy phonation.

Have a great day. David
