Let me tell you a story. with some truth
Back in 2013, I fell in love with lighting. In fact, one of the main reasons I got into the DJ world was because it gave me a way to fund the lighting rig I dreamed of building.
As the years went on, I found myself falling in love with other parts of the industry too. First sound. Then video. And when the pandemic hit, music became the focus.. I share this only because some DJs are extremely good with music. But they lack the gear to professionally perform at a high-level.
Do I believe gear matters? Absolutely. Otherwise, I wouldn’t invest so heavily in it.
Do I believe you need expensive gear to become a DJ? Not at all.
But at a certain level of performance, the right tools make a difference. They make your job easier, streamline your workflow, and give you the ability to adapt when things don’t go according to plan.
A recent event reminded me of that.
A client told me a speaker would be standing about 20 feet from my wireless receiver with a clear line of sight. Instead, they ended up giving their speech roughly 45 feet away through a glass window and tables of chairs. As you can imagine, the microphone started cutting out.
The moment the first speech ended, I was able to make adjustments to the transmitter’s power settings and solve the issue.
The reality is, I can’t control where someone decides to walk when they have a microphone in their hand and how they hold it. What I can control is whether I have equipment that gives me options when things go sideways such as adjusting transmitter levels and equine a mic to prevent feedback.
That’s the difference.
Great events aren’t built on perfect conditions. They’re built on preparation, experience, and having the right tools available when the unexpected happens. Things happen. It’s all about the reaction, and gear absolutely makes a difference.
I pride myself and caring some of the best products in the market!

One of the practices I’ve developed before an event is spending a few minutes with one of my favorite music crates after everything is set up.
Sometimes I’m handed a playlist that immediately inspires ideas. Other times, the music doesn’t naturally spark my creativity the same way. When that happens, I’ll jump into a crate filled with songs I genuinely love and know well.
It’s not because I’m going to play those songs. It’s because it gets my mind moving. It helps me think about energy, transitions, crowd reactions, and possibilities. A little bit of personal practice before doors open helps me show up more creative, more focused, and more prepared for whatever the night brings.
The best performances often start before the first guest ever walks through the door.
Blessed by the audiences who enjoy the classics!
Some DJs hold all the “bangers” for the very end of the night. But I think what people forget is most artists usually have 2–3 true bangers anyway.
When you’re warming up a dance floor, don’t be afraid to play some of the overplayed songs early — especially in a quick-mix format — so you don’t have to rely on them later when the majority of the room finally joins in.
The people who hit the dance floor first are obviously there to have fun. They deserve a banger set too.
