𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗙 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 is pleased to partner with 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘆𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 to provide a set number of Gold LEAF courses each term, along with ongoing community technology support.

Maine has the only statewide senior college network in the country, which has offered classes to older students for 25 years.

𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 courses cover topics from marine biology to foreign affairs to poetry—with no tests or grades. We hear how lifelong learning enriches older students' lives and benefits their mental and physical health.

𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐅 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 presented a hybrid class called 𝐅𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐲 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝗙𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘆 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:

𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐥, a nurse with extensive experience shared his nursing experiences, which laid the foundation for the second class, where participants could share tales about their mutual experiences in health care.

𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗙 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 started the first of two sessions with Tyler Provencher’s 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐇𝐢𝐣𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 on August 14, 2026.

Tyler explored how social media companies, digital marketing, and even news media outlets have hijacked your mind and created reflexive behavior to keep you connected, enraged, and engaged.

𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 are Tyler Provencher and Christine Daly, who introduced Tyler to the class.

𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗙 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗠𝗘, 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟯, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

It encompasses the former homestead of Maine-born artist Bernard Langlais and his wife, Helen Friend Langlais. Dotting the landscape are more than a dozen of Langlais’s large-scale wooden sculptures, remnants of the expansive outdoor art environment he created here from 1966 to 1977.

𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 is the host, Caitlin Kelty-Huber, who did a wonderful job of explaining the wooden sculptures and their significance.

𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐣𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐅 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞
Gold LEAF Institute offered a two-session Mahjong class on July 29 and August 5, 2026.

Mahjong is a tile-based game of skill, strategy, and luck that originated in China during the 19th century. Usually played by four people, the game involves drawing and discarding tiles, much like the card game Rummy. The goal is to be the first player to build a complete winning hand.

Participants enjoyed learning this mind-stimulating and strategic game while having fun with fellow GLI members.

𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Professor Carol Lee, the Mahjong instructor, sits with GLI class members and demonstrates the Mahjong tiles, explaining their significance.
