Every child deserves the chance to grow up with books.

Through Give Reading, Davis Education Foundation is helping more Davis County children receive free, high-quality books through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. From birth to age five, participating children receive a new book in the mail each month—building a home library before they ever walk into a kindergarten classroom.

But this is about more than books. Early access to reading helps build vocabulary, curiosity, confidence, and the foundation children need to be ready to learn.

When you Give Reading, you help put 12 books into the hands of a child—and give families more opportunities to read, learn, and grow together.

Some heroes wear a badge. Some drive a bus. Yesterday, we got to honor both. 💛

At Farmington Junior High, the Homes for Heroes Foundation presented a $5,000 grant to Davis Education Foundation to honor two Davis School District employees who show up for our students every single day — even while carrying heavy burdens of their own.

Officer Varela, School Resource Officer at Farmington Junior High, and Sarah Lowder of our Transportation team each received $2,500 in recognition of their service and in support through a difficult season.

Jay Flynn flew in from South Carolina to present the awards in person, joined by family, friends, coworkers, Farmington City Police officers, and the school community that loves these two women.

Thank you to the Homes for Heroes Foundation and Marita Viselli for making this possible, to Principal Archibald and Farmington Junior High for hosting, and most of all — to Officer Varela and Sarah, for reminding us what quiet, everyday heroism looks like.

Parton died today. She was 80.

In 1995 she started mailing free books to children, because her own father never learned to read. Thirty years and more than 300 million books later, they're still arriving — one a month, addressed to the child, free to the family.

Some of them arrive in Davis County.

We're working to bring Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to 850 kids here: Head Start students, children experiencing homelessness, and families building a reading habit before kindergarten. Thirty-six dollars covers a child for a full year. Three dollars a month.

She'd want the books to keep coming. So do we.

Last week, more than 500 Davis County kids got brand-new back-to-school wardrobes at Child Spree — shopping all three Davis County Kohl's locations with our incredible volunteers. 💙

But the moment that melted every heart? A high schooler who came to us years ago, when she and her mom were experiencing homelessness. She got her Child Spree wardrobe back then, and she never forgot what it felt like to start school looking just as cute as everyone else.

This summer, she sold temporary tattoos along the Kaysville Parade route, earned $200, and donated every dollar back — so another kid could have the same fresh start.

500 kids outfitted. One full-circle story. That's the mission.

A huge thank you to HB Boys, the local franchisees of Burger King, for visiting our 1st and 3rd grade classrooms — and for going way above and beyond. Every single student at Adelaide is heading into summer with 10 free meals from Burger King. That's thousands of meals to help bridge the gap when school is out.
Summer hunger is real for so many kids in our community, and partners like HB Boys make sure no child has to wonder where their next meal is coming from. The crowns were a hit. The generosity is unmatched.
